Miller, a catcher, hit .339 with five home runs and 44 RBI during his senior season at Armstrong.
“When I did not get drafted, I thought (it) was my sign that baseball was over,” Miller said. “I had planned to move on to graduate school, but when I got that phone call asking if I wanted to continue playing, I realized it was a once-in-a lifetime opportunity that I couldn’t turn it down.
“I’m excited that I get to say that I play professional baseball. It’s a lot to take in. It was very spontaneous how it all developed but I am looking forward to playing this weekend.”
Miller played four seasons for the Pirates, earning All-Peach Belt Conference, All-Region and All-Region Gold Glove honors during his career as well as Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors as a sophomore. He finished his career eighth all-time on the Armstrong hit list with 213 and also earned PBC All-Academic Team honors three times.
ALL-STAR RATINGS: Derek Jeter’s final All-Star appearance has helped boost television ratings for the game.
The American League’s 5-3 win Tuesday in Minneapolis averaged more than 11.3 million viewers on Fox, up from 11 million for last year’s game at the Mets’ Citi Field in New York. The rating was up 9 percent for the first full half-hour, when the retiring Yankees shortstop first stepped to the plate.
The network said Wednesday that the 7.0 fast national rating was the highest since 2010. The 2012 edition set a record low with a 6.8.
RANGERS: General manager Jon Daniels said catcher Geovany Soto will be activated from the disabled list before Friday’s game at Toronto and set for his season debut in the majors after knee surgery.
ROYALS: Got some relief help, acquiring veteran reliever Jason Frasor from the Texas Rangers for Triple-A right-hander Spencer Patton.
The trade was made Wednesday, the same day Patton was in the Triple-A All-Star Game. The Rangers assigned him to Round Rock.
Frasor was 1-1 with a 3.34 ERA in 38 appearances this season, his second in Texas. The right-hander spent nine seasons with Toronto (2004-12), returning to the Blue Jays after being traded to the White Sox in July 2011 and finishing that season in Chicago.
