The Atlanta Braves purchased the contract of second baseman Tommy La Stella on Wednesday, marking the beginning of a new direction at the position.
La Stella, ranked as the Braves’ No. 9 prospect by Baseball America, was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett. He hit .293 with a .384 on-base percentage and 25 walks in 47 games for Gwinnett.
La Stella, whose strengths are contact ability and an eye at the plate, owns a career .322 average in four minor league seasons. He was an eighth-round pick in 2011 out of Coastal Carolina.
The Braves optioned infielder Tyler Pastornicky to Gwinnett as the corresponding move.
