Angels' Mike Scioscia says contract rumors won't distract Mike Trout

Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Monday that he isn’t worried about possible contract talks becoming a distraction for center fielder Mike Trout.

“It’s not an issue and it’s certainly not an issue with Mike,” Scioscia said.

Published reports have said the team and Trout are discussing a long-term deal.

Scioscia said he hasn’t seen a contract becoming a problem in his time with the Angels.

“We haven’t had anybody here in 15 years because of a contract situation that hasn’t come out and given 100 percent,” Scioscia told reporters.

METS: First baseman Ike Davis admits he concealed a nagging oblique strain from the team last year but claims the injury wasn’t a factor in his poor performance.

Speaking Monday, Davis confirmed a story that first appeared Sunday on the New York Post’s Web site.

Says Davis: “It’s just an overblown thing. Everyone has injuries and then they get hurt. So it was pointless to write an article. I sucked last year because I sucked. It’s not because I had an injury. You always have injuries. And now it just looks bad. I didn’t want the article to come out, and it did.”

NATIONALS: Reliever Tyler Clippard returned to the team from a bad back, but bullpen hopeful Ryan Mattheus will need to have an MRI on his chest.

PIRATES: Claimed third baseman Brent Morel off waivers from Toronto and designated for assignment infielder Chase d’Arnaud to make room on the 40-man roster for Morel.

OBITUARY: Barney Nugent, a former athletic trainer for the San Francisco Giants, died Saturday. He was 61.

The Giants announced Monday that Nugent died in Massachusetts after a short battle with cancer. He was diagnosed last summer.

Nugent was San Francisco’s trainer for 11 seasons from 1993-2003.
