Big second inning lifts GreenJackets over Intimidators

Augusta starter Martin Agosta’s departure after the first inning meant the GreenJackets would be forced to utilize their bullpen at least a full eight innings.

No problem.

The offense helped back the pen with its highest run total since June 13 and the GreenJackets posted a 6-5 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Saturday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Agosta struggled early hitting his spots and finding the zone, resulting in two runs allowed in the first. His velocity was down, which led to inconsistent mechanics that resulted in two walks and two hit batsmen around a two-run single by Mike Marjama.

“He’s going through a little dead arm,” manager Mike Goff said. “We just didn’t want to take the chance with him.”

Augusta left-hander Matt Lujan relieved Agosta for four innings, allowing eight hits and only two runs while striking out three. For the second consecutive outing, Lujan pitched multiple innings in relief.

GreenJackets second baseman Trevor Brown went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Matt Duffy added two RBI, while Shayne Houck and Jesus Galindo each had one. Catcher Ben Turner had two hits, including a double.

All but two of the game’s runs were scored in the first two innings. After Marjama’s two runs in the first, Kale Kiser doubled home Kannapolis’ third run in the second.

The GreenJackets scored one in the first on a Houck RBI double.

They put five on the board in the second on an RBI single by Galindo, a two-run single by Duffy and an error that scored the fifth run.

“It was a good little inning for our offense,” Brown said. “We just executed at the right time.”

The Intimidators scored one in the sixth on a double play and came within a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Marjama. But Augusta reliever Jorge Bucardo left the bases loaded to end the rally.

Kannapolis stranded six in the final three innings, leaving a runner in scoring position in each frame.
