With one swing of the bat, Augusta GreenJackets designated hitter Mitch Delfino turned what was previously a tight game into a one-sided GreenJackets win.
Delfino hit a grand slam to lead the GreenJackets to an 11-0 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats on Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium, evening the four-game series at one win apiece.
Delfino added a single and walk to go 2 for 3 with four RBI. The right-handed batter has three home runs this season, two for grand slams.
“The previous at-bat, (Savannah’s Robert Gsellman) got me to roll over a slider, so I was telling myself to sit back, let it get deep, throw the hands,” Delfino said.
“He came inside with a fastball, and I got the hands inside and got the barrel to the ball.”
Ben Turner went 3 for 4 with three doubles and two RBI. Andrew Cain and Matt Duffy each had two hits.
Paired with 14 hits for Augusta (24-16) was right-hander Joe Biagini’s seven scoreless innings. He gave up just one hit with two walks and two strikeouts.
Biagini allowed four baserunners in the first two innings before retiring his final 16 batters. The only hit for Savannah (22-17) came in the first at-bat of the game.
“I’ve been leaving the ball up a little bit,” Biagini said. “I’ve been trying not to nibble but attack them more than I have. I think that helped a little bit. Once I got out of that first inning, I was able to make a mental adjustment and have a better idea of how it’s going to feel the next inning.”
The shutout performance was Biagini’s second of the season. He rebounded from allowing eight earned runs in his past two starts to record his best outing of the season.
The GreenJackets started the scoring in the second on a RBI double by Turner.
They added two in the fifth on a groundout and error before Delfino’s grand slam made it a six-run inning.
Augusta added four in the seventh. Trevor Brown singled home one, Turner doubled home another, an error scored one and Andrew Cain singled home the fourth.
