New owners official for GreenJackets

The Augusta GreenJackets officially announced their new ownership group Monday, marking the beginning of a new era in the team’s history.

Agon Sports & Entertainment officially became the new ownership group, purchasing the team from Ripken Baseball, which owned the club for seven years.

The sale was approved by the South Atlantic League, Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball. It was announced Dec. 19, pending approval, as part of the larger Project Jackson announcement, which included the North Augusta stadium proposal. There has been no update on the status of the plan.

Headed by Agon and GreenJackets president Jeff Eiseman, the ownership group includes investors with local and regional ties.

“We are very excited that the day has arrived; this is an exciting day for the community and the future of baseball in the region,” Eiseman said in a prepared statement. “Having an ownership group with deep local and regional ties helps cement that bond.”

The club is celebrating its 25th anniversary of operations in Augusta.

“The South Atlantic League is excited about the new ownership in Augusta and the vision the ownership has, and is thrilled with the significant number of local investors who are involved,” league president Eric Krupa said.

The purchase price was not disclosed.

Ripken Baseball, headed by Cal Ripken Jr. and Billy Ripken, purchased the GreenJackets in 2005 from Mike and Jeffrey Savit.
