The Braves scored their lone run off New York starter David Phelps in the first inning. Jordan Schafer led off with a double to right-center field, moved to third on a flyout and scored on Justin Upton’s groundout.
Atlanta added a run in the seventh off reliever Mark Montgomery. Tyler Pastornicky had an infield single, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by catcher J.R. Murphy. He scored on a balk by Montgomery.
Maholm blanked New York on three hits over 32/3 innings. He struck out two and walked four.
Freddie Freeman went 2 for 3 for the Braves.
Phelps, who entered camp competing with Ivan Nova for the final spot in the Yankees’ starting rotation, allowed one run on two hits in four innings. He struck out two and walked one.
Atlanta second baseman Dan Uggla was hit by a pitch in the back of the neck during the sixth inning. He left the game after being struck by minor leaguer Branden Pinder’s pitch.
“There’s a little sensation,” Uggla said. “I’m good. Luckily, I never went black or anything like that. I feel fine.”
Ichiro Suzuki doubled for the Yankees in his first game since being involved in a vehicle accident.
Suzuki was not injured in the crash that totaled his SUV a few miles from Steinbrenner Field after last Saturday’s game with Detroit.
