Braves exercise options on three players

  • Follow Baseball

The Atlanta Braves exercised the options on catcher Brian McCann, right-hander Tim Hudson and left-hander Paul Maholm.

McCann, a six-time All-Star, will earn $12 million next season instead of receiving a $500,000 buyout. McCann had surgery after the season to repair the labrum in his right shoulder that could force him to miss the start of the season. He is expected to return to light baseball activities in about four months and could receive full clearance in April.

McCann hit a career-low .230 with 20 homers.

The 37-year-old Hudson will earn $9 million instead of getting a $1 million buyout. He was 16-7 with a 3.62 ERA.

Maholm, 30, will earn $6.5 million rather than receiving a $500,000 buyout. Atlanta acquired Maholm from the Cubs on July 30, and the left-hander was 13-11 with a 3.67 ERA.

TIGERS: Jim Leyland insisted throughout the latter part of the season that there would be a time and a place to discuss his managing future.

That moment came Tuesday – when Detroit announced Leyland would be back in 2013 with a one-year contract extension.

The Tigers and their manager quickly ended any remaining speculation about his status, just two days after Detroit was swept by the San Francisco Giants in the World Series.

• Detroit exercised a $6 million option on shortstop Jhonny Peralta and a $3.5 million on reliever Octavio Dotel.

WHITE SOX: Pitcher Jake Peavy and Chicago agreed to a $29 million, two-year contract.

Chicago also exercised a $9.5 million option on right-hander Gavin Floyd, declined a $10 million option on right-hander Brett Myers and turned down a $13 million option on third baseman Kevin Youkilis, a former Augusta GreenJacket, acquired from Boston in June. Myers gets a $3 million buyout and Youkilis $1 million.

BLUE JAYS: Left-hander Ricky Romero has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow and is expected to need six weeks to recover.

ATHLETICS: Allowed left-hander Dallas Braden and right-hander Joey Devine, a former Atlanta Brave, to become free agents. The pair, who missed 2012 because of injuries, refused minor league assignments.

RANGERS: Declined options on right-handers Scott Feldman ($9.25 million) and Yoshinori Tateyama ($1.2 million).

CUBS: Hired Vanderbilt assistant Derek Johnson as their minor league pitching coordinator.

Johnson spent the past 11 seasons as the Commodores’ pitching coach.
