Atlanta Braves catcher Brian McCann had surgery Tuesday to repair an injury to his right shoulder that hampered his hitting this season.

The surgery was performed by Braves orthopedic surgeon Dr. Xavier Duralde.

McCann dealt with soreness in his shoulder and tendinitis in his right knee this season. The shoulder problem didn’t affect his throwing but contributed to his career-low .230 batting average this season.

GIANTS: Manager Bruce Bochy calls it’s a “good chance” second baseman Marco Scutaro will play in Game 3 of the NL Championship Series against the Cardinals today after injuring his hip during Monday’s Game 2.

Bochy said in a text message to The Associated Press on Tuesday that Scutaro is “doing fine,” along with first base coach Roberto Kelly, who sustained a concussion when hit by a batting practice ball from Buster Posey on Saturday. Kelly missed Games 1 and 2 but traveled with the team to St. Louis on Tuesday, Bochy said.

Scutaro strained his left hip when the Cardinals’ Matt Holliday crashed into him with a hard slide in Game 2 on Monday night at AT&T Park. Scutaro had an MRI on Monday night after the game.

Scutaro went down in the first inning of the Giants’ 7-1 win, then hit a two-run single in the fourth before coming out of the game after the fifth inning.

Bochy called it “an illegal slide.”

RED SOX: New York Yankees bench coach Tony Pena is the second person to be interviewed as Boston continues to search for Bobby Valentine’s replacement.

The former Red Sox catcher and Kansas City Royals manager was interviewed on Monday.

Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach met with the Red Sox last Friday. Former Boston bench coach and current Baltimore Orioles third base coach DeMarlo Hale and San Diego Padres special assistant Brad Ausmus are expected to be interviewed this week.
