Blair’s home run sparks Jackets

In Rome, Ga., Elliott Blair had a two-run homer and a double to lead the Augusta GreenJackets past the Rome Braves 5-1 on Thursday night.

Blair’s homer came in the seventh inning and put Augusta up 5-1.

Augusta starter Adalberto Mejia (10-7) went seven innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out five.

Augusta took two of three from the Braves in their final road series of the season.

The GreenJackets, who were eliminated from posteason contention in Wednesday night’s loss to Rome, open a season-ending four-game homestand against Charleston tonight.

• GreenJackets outfielder Shawn Payne was named a South Atlantic League postseason All-Star.

The 23-year-old Middle Georgia product leads the GreenJackets with a .311 batting average, 66 runs scored and 56 RBI.

He ranks second in the league with 52 stolen bases and has been caught stealing just three times.

Payne was the only GreenJacket represented on the list.

Starting pitcher Kyle Crick (7-6, 2.39) has the best ERA in the league and teammate Clayton Blackburn (8-4, 2.54) leads the league with 143 strikeouts, but neither received a postseason award.

The voters were front office executives, managers and media who cover the league.

Golf

Savannah man laps senior field

In Eatonton, Ga., Doug Hanzel’s senior debut will be a hard one to top.

The 55-year-old Savannah resident won the Georgia State Golf Association’s Senior Open by 16 shots on Thursday.

Hanzel, who led by 12 after 36 holes, closed with 3-under-par 69 at Reynolds Plantation’s Great Waters course.

He opened with rounds of 68-66 to finish at 13-under 203.

Don Marsh finished second at 219 after a closing 73.

Kenny Larry was the top local finisher. He shot 79-78-79–236 to tie for 27th place. Doug Faulkner (82-79-81–242) tied for 52nd place and Mike Kelley (85-76-83–244) finished 59th.

Colleges

Lady Pacers play to an opening tie

In Aiken, the USC Aiken women’s soccer team opened its season by playing to a 0-0 double overtime tie with Newberry.

Pacers goalkeeper Alli Edens had three saves while Newberry’s Morgan Cox had 10 saves.

The Lady Pacers had a 22-5 advantage in shots, including 16-1 in the second half.

• The Augusta State women’s basketball team will open its 2012-13 season with two road games, then play five consecutive home games.

The schedule starts with a Nov. 10 game at North Greenville, followed by a No. 15 game at West Georgia.

The Lady Jaguars open their home schedule Nov. 20, against Claflin.

• USC Aiken baseball player Josh Miller, who played this summer for the Columbia Blowfish, was named to the Coastal Plain League postseason All-Star first team as a designated hitter/utility player.

Twenty players made the team in the wood bat league.

Miller also played in the league’s All-Star game in late July.

Fellow Pacer Jake Padgett, a junior pitcher, also was a mid-season All-Star selection in the Coastal Plain League.

Miller and Padgett helped lead the Blowfish to their first Coastal Plain League Petitt Cup Championship.
