Former North Augusta High School star Marty Gantt has become the first Augusta-area baseball prospect selected in this year’s Major League Baseball First-Year Players’ Draft.
The 22-year-old outfielder was taken by the Tampa Bay Rays this afternoon in the seventh round with the 242nd overall pick. Gantt was known for his pitching in high school but transitioned off the mound and into the outfield at College of Charleston.
The 5-foot-9, 170-pound slugger led the Cougars with a .373 batting average, 46 RBI and 29 stolen bases in 38 attempts.
He helped the North Augusta Yellow Jackets reach the District II finals as a senior in 2008 with an 8-3 record and 1.95 ERA and originally committed to play college ball at the University of South Carolina.
Gantt instead played two seasons at Spartanburg Methodist before finishing his amateur career at College of Charleston.
