RANGERS: The AL West leaders made a pair of trades to strengthen their roster for the stretch run, acquiring reliever Mike Gonzalez and bringing back catcher Matt Treanor.
• A 24-year-old man is in fair condition at a Dallas hospital four days after he fell 21 feet from a stairwell while leaving a game at Rangers Ballpark, according to a spokesperson at Methodist Dallas Medical Center.
Charles Thomas Conner, of San Antonio, was knocked unconscious by the fall onto a concrete floor underneath the stands Saturday night when the Rangers were playing the Los Angeles Angels.
INDIANS: Designated hitter Travis Hafner received “encouraging” news Wednesday from doctors about his injured right foot and could return soon for the playoff chase.
Also, outfielder Michael Brantley had successful right hand surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.
Hafner has been sidelined since Aug. 21, when he strained a tendon in his foot after hitting a single in Detroit and rounding first base.
