North Augusta's Payton Shiver reacts to being picked off on Saturday. A late RBI lifted the Yellow Jackets to the district title.

Wilson hit a ball past third in the bottom of the fifth to give the North Augusta the lead as Sidney Seigler pitched a gem in a 2-1 win Saturday against Summerville in a Class AAAA Lower State tournament game at Riverview Park.

With the go-ahead run on base in a tie game, Wilson wanted to just make contact, especially since Summerville had already made two errors in the inning.

Though she didn't check to see if she got a hit or RBI as she ran down the line, Wilson found out when she got to first.

"Everyone was cheering, and as I looked (at the scoreboard), I saw it was 2-1," Wilson said. "I was like, 'Whoa!' "

Wilson recorded three hits on the day.

North Augusta (25-6) has now won five consecutive games, winning the District V crown before beating District VI champion Summerville. The Yellow Jackets lost to Ridge View to begin the district tournament but won four elimination games in a row to take the district title.

After Summerville (24-4) scored in the first inning behind hits from Sarah Montei and Rochelle Lyda, Seigler allowed only two more hits, retired the leadoff batter in the last four innings and retired the final five hitters.

Her pitching and the defense behind her gave the North Augusta offense time to come through. But Seigler had to wait until late in the game to pitch with the lead as the attack couldn't take advantage of threats early in the contest.

In the second inning, North Augusta loaded the bases with no outs before two strikeouts and a ground out to short ended the threat. In the fourth, North Augusta put the first two on but then made three outs in a row.

The Yellow Jackets got it going in the fifth, when Kaylee Spires singled with one out and Seigler reached safely as Summerville first baseman Lyda had her second error of the game.

Payton Shiver then made contact as the Yellow Jackets tied the game with an error charged to the shortstop, who didn't handle the ball cleanly and saw her throw get to first too late.

That set the stage for Wilson, and her one-out hit proved what Seigler knew was bound to happen.

"We are a team with heart," said Seigler, adding she knew her club would find a way to score. "We know what we have to do -- I know we have fight in us."
