Fields comes up big again for Jags

Augusta University (12-8, 9-5) defeated Flagler (7-11, 4-10) 77-72 in a tough game at Christenberry Fieldhouse on Wednesday night.

Senior forward Tamyrik “TC” Fields was honored before the game for recording his 1,000th career point in the road win over USC Aiken on Jan. 24.

Fields is the 29th player in program history to reach the 1,000 mark.

“It felt great, especially coming off a good rivalry win at USC Aiken,” Fields said. “Then we had to just carry it over and try to get as many wins as possible.”

Taking the game in his hands, Fields led the Jags with 33 points on 15 of 20 shooting. Tyvez Monroe finished with 16 and was 2 for 5 from three-point land.

“It was a good team win and TC was unbelievable again tonight. He’s having a great senior year,” Augusta head coach Dip Metress said.

It wasn’t hard to see why Fields was able to provide the spark the Jags needed tonight.

“I was feeling pretty good,” Fields said. “We were down so I decided to step it up a little bit and then everybody else started stepping up, so it was like a chain reaction.”

The first half between Augusta and Flagler was essentially a deadlock. The Jags won the rebound battle as both teams shot 48 percent from the field and were perfect on free throws. The lone bruise on Augusta’s box score was the 1-7 shooting from beyond the arc as the Jags entered the locker room with a 39-36 lead.

Augusta had to overcome some adversity in the second half to seal the deal. Following a tough foul on Deane Williams as he was driving the basket and losing Kyle Doyle to foul trouble, Metress’ squad had to pull itself together to get out of Christenberry with a win.

“It was a tough break for us, because that one kind of separated the game,” Metress said. “The good thing is that we made free throws down the stretch. We lost some games because we didn’t make free throws, so it was a good team win.”

The Augusta women (3-15, 1-13) fell to Flagler (13-5, 11-3) 74-61 in a game that featured a particularly odd stat line.

The Saints were almost perfect from the line, shooting 24-26, while the Jags only attempted four free throws the entire night.

Malaysia Robinson led Flagler with 25, hitting 11-14 from the field. Augusta featured five players in double digits, led by Brianna Middleton with 13. Middleton also recorded 12 boards to complete a double-double on the night.

The Jags play Saturday on the road at Columbus State, with the women tipping off at 1:30 and men at 3:30.
