Senior cutter wins Futurity Open finals

Futurity Open Champion Chubby Turner

Chubby Turner, the lone senior entry in the Futurity Open finals, showed the young guys how it’s done.

Turner and Wanna Dual marked 220 to win the crown jewel of the Augusta Futurity on Friday night at James Brown Arena. Turner and his horse finished 2.5 points ahead of Matt Gaines and Metallic Drifter in the 22-horse final.

The resident trainer at J Five Horse Ranch in Weatherford, Texas, Turner is an NCHA Hall of Fame trainer with more than four decades of experience. Turner claimed his first Augusta Futurity championship, breaking a six-year run of Futurity Open titles won by either Austin Shepard or Craig Thompson.

Shepard of Summerdale, Ala., sought his fifth Futurity Open title. He and Dual Reyish won the NCHA World finals title last month in Fort Worth, Texas, and tied for the top go-round score earlier this week. The pair began building momentum during their finals run, but an ornery third cow led to a score of 212.
