Cubs hire on pitching coach

The Cubs have hired Jim Hickey as their pitching coach and moved Brandon Hyde to bench coach.

Hickey spent 11 years as Tampa Bay’s pitching coach before a split with the Rays at the end of the season. He is reuniting with his old boss Joe Maddon in Chicago and replacing Chris Bosio, whose contract was not renewed.

Hyde takes over for Dave Martinez, who left to become the Washington Nationals’ manager.

--Former major league skipper Chip Hale will be the bench coach for new Washington Nationals manager Martinez, while Derek Lilliquist will be the team’s pitching coach.

Also joining the team are first base coach Tim Bogar and assistant hitting coach Joe Dillon. The Nationals had previously announced Kevin Long will be the hitting coach.

--Miami Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill says Don Mattingly will be back as manager next season.

The decision had been expected, with Mattingly entering the third season of a four-year contract. But the recent sale of the franchise to a group including Derek Jeter had left Mattingly’s status in question.

Mattingly and Jeter were briefly teammates with the New York Yankees.

The Marlins finished 77-85 this year, their eighth consecutive losing season. The payroll is expected to be reduced by about one-third this offseason under the new ownership.
