Two Lincoln County legends sat side by side Tuesday night to help the Augusta Bulldog Club kick off its fall season.
Former Red Devils and Georgia star Garrison Hearst was the featured guest at the club’s annual football kickoff meeting at the Legends Club. A familiar face arrived beside him.
“It’s always good to see coach,” Hearst said of Larry Campbell. “He’s been a legend forever.”
Hearst and Campbell, who coached Lincoln County to 11 state titles, have both been legends in the area for some time.
Hearst won multiple state championships for the Red Devils before starring at Georgia between 1990-92, where he led the nation in touchdowns and scoring his junior year, was a consensus All-American and Doak Walker Award winner. He left Athens, Ga., ranked second in several Bulldog rushing categories behind Herschel Walker, was drafted third overall in 1993 and played parts of 10 seasons in the NFL.
He was swarmed by Georgia fans at the club’s meeting Tuesday and offered a “Go ‘Dogs” in front of a packed Legends Club.
“It’s home,” Hearst said. “There’s nothing better than coming home. Lincoln County is so close to the Augusta area, the CSRA. You’ve got the Red Devils who love you and you’ve got the Bulldogs who are very strong here also, so it makes it fun to come home.”
Augusta Mayor Hardie Davis made an appearance and declared Tuesday as Garrison Hearst Day in Augusta.
“It gives us great pleasure to look back at a career, not only as a student-athlete but as a person,” Davis said. “I think that’s what people are so proud of.”
Also in attendance were Loran Smith, the legendary Georgia athletics voice, and Laura Coble, the accomplished Georgia golfer. Those in attendance offered optimistic views for Georgia’s season, including Hearst.
“Got a lot of high expectations for them this year,” he said. “I think they’ll be better than they were last year, of course, and considering we had a young quarterback last year, we didn’t do that bad, in my opinion. I think we’ll be even better this year.”
