Three UGA players land on coaches preseason All-SEC first team

Georgia defensive tackle Trenton Thompson (78) gestures during a game against Nicholls on Sept. 10, 2016, in Athens. Georgia won 26-24. Thompson had offseason shoulder surgery. Then an offseason incident forced the defensive tackle to withdraw from the university for the spring semester, apparently leaving his college career in jeopardy. Georgia had three players make the coaches preseason All-SEC football team announced by the league on Wednesday. Eight players were selected in all to one of the three teams.

That’s the same number of players that were picked by the media who voted on its own preseason All-SEC team in July.

Running back Nick Chubb, defensive tackle Trenton Thompson and inside linebacker Roquan Smith were first team selections by both the coaches and media.

Tight end Isaac Nauta was a second-team choice by the coaches after making the first team by the media. He was joined on the coaches’ second-team by offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn and safety Dominick Sanders.

Defensive tackle Jonathan Ledbetter made the coaches’ third team after not being selected on the media team. Outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter was third team on both.

Tailback Sony Michel was a third-team pick by the media.

Alabama lead all teams with 15 selections.

Coaches were not allowed to vote for players on their own team.
