The Augusta GreenJackets will begin a new era April 12, 2018.
The GreenJackets announced Thursday the home opener in their new North Augusta ballpark will be April 12. They’ll play host to Lexington (Ky.) for the Thursday night game.
“It’s nice to be able to release it to the community and let everyone know so they can mark their calendars,” GreenJackets vice president Tom Denlinger said. “That first series is going to be a party. Being able to open a new stadium is a generational thing. It’s not often we’re able to do this.”
The San Francisco Giants affiliate is set to close out its time at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Sept. 4. The GreenJackets will move to the new Ballpark at Riverside Village, a riverfront stadium at Hammond’s Ferry in North Augusta.
The ballpark is part of a larger development once known as Project Jackson but now tabbed Riverside Village. Besides the stadium, Riverside Village will feature a Crowne Plaza hotel and conference center, apartment living, senior living, retail, restaurants and Class “A” office space.
“As an organization, it’s a game-changer,” Denlinger said. “It’ll be a crown jewel for the community.”
Augusta’s season will begin April 5 at Columbia before traveling to Greensboro through April 11. The Lexington series April 12-15 marks the beginning of the new ballpark, and Kannapolis follows April 16-18.
Notable home games in the new stadium include Mother’s Day on May 13, Memorial Day on May 28, July 3 and Labor Day on Sept. 3. Of the 13 opponents in the South Atlantic League, nine will visit Augusta. Asheville, Hickory, Delmarva and Lakewood will not make the trip for the 2018 season.
A full promotional calendar with game times, giveaways, entertainment acts and fireworks dates will be released by the GreenJackets at a later date.
