Jackets upend ’Dogs on road
In Charleston, S.C., Manuel Geraldo singled three times as the Augusta GreenJackets defeated the Charleston RiverDogs 9-4 on Thursday.
Augusta started the scoring with a big fifth inning, when it exploded for six runs, including two-run doubles by Brandon Van Horn and Kelvin Beltre.
The GreenJackets later added two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. In the seventh, Ashford Fulmer and Beltre hit RBI doubles, while Van Horn hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Ryan Kirby in the eighth.
Augusta’s Garrett Williams (1-0) got the win after allowing one run on five hits over five innings. Brian Keller (3-3) took the loss after a rough outing in which he allowed six runs and six hits over five innings.
Pacers rally, win regional opener
In Mount Olive, N.C., USC Aiken scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to come from behind and beat Georgia College 6-5 on Friday in its opening game of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.
Daulton Weeks hit a two-run homer to left center to tie it and Luke Westerberg delivered an RBI single up the middle on a 2-2 pitch to win it.
Nick Yobbi (5-3) pitched the final three innings and earned the win.
The Pacers (40-13) will face North Georgia tonight at 7. The Nighthawks beat Lincoln Memorial 4-1.
Mustang signs to run college track
Midland Valley’s Hart Mathis signed Thursday to run track for Columbia International University.
Mathis signed her letter of intent during a ceremony at the school. She’ll compete for the Columbia school in the National Christian College Athletic Association.
Two Glenn Hills football players inked letters of intent Thursday to play collegiately.
Devin Rahney signed to play for ASA College, while Devante Ryans signed with Northland College. The two standout Spartans join D’Angelo Johnson as future college players after Johnson recently signed with College of the Siskiyous.
McGregor nears Mayweather bout
Conor McGregor has come to an agreement with UFC that has moved a proposed fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. closer to reality.
UFC President Dana White said he reached a deal with McGregor , MMA’s biggest star and lightweight champion, and will now start negotiations on a mega fight with the retired Mayweather that could be one of the best selling fights in history.
“I’m not saying the fight will happen, but I’ve got one side done. Now it’s time to work on the other,” White said.
Nadal moves on at Italian Open
In Rome, Rafael Nadal’s preparations for the French Open continued apace as he swept past 13th-seeded Jack Sock 6-3, 6-4 Thursday to ease into the Italian Open quarterfinals and extend his winning streak to 17 matches.
Finland bounces US from worlds
In Cologne, Germany, Finland ended the United States’ ice hockey world championship campaign with a 2-0 defeat in the quarterfinals on Thursday, after a run of six straight victories.
