Sigg helps Dogs win in regional

In San Antonio, Augusta’s Greyson Sigg was the No. 2 player for Georgia as the Bulldogs won their 54-hole NCAA Regional to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

Sigg, a freshman, finished ninth overall, closing with 1-over-par 73. He opened with 68-74 and finished at 1-under 215.

He and Lee McCoy, who finished second overall at 207, were the lone Bulldogs to crack the top 10.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs counted 68 by McCoy, 72 by Mike Cromie, 73 by Sigg and 74 by Joey Garber.

• In Eugene, Ore., Georgia Regents senior Alex Wennstam finished tied for 59th place in the NCAA Eugene Regional.

Wennstam, playing as an individual, shot 79-73-79.

South Carolina finished fifth to qualify for the NCAA Championships. North Augusta’s Matt NeSmith shot 72-74-77 to finish tied for 36th place for the Gamecocks.

Three from area win state titles

In Columbia, North Augusta’s Nik O’Brien, Silver Bluff’s Jalen Douse and Aiken’s Ashbrook Gwinn were among the winners in the South Carolina High School League State Track and Field Championship on Saturday.

O’Brien won the Class AAAA 3,200 meters with a time of 9:27.56.

Douse won the Class AA high jump at 6-04.

Gwinn won the Class AAAA 1,600 meters. She ran a 5:03.56.

• In Aiken, South Aiken beat Ashley Ridge 3-0 to reach the Class AAAA Lower State boys soccer finals.

Richt heads up UGA Days Tour

Georgia football coach Mark Richt and basketball coach Mark Fox, along with other administrators and coaches, will be the featured guests at the UGA Days Tour, which will make a stop in Augusta at 6 p.m. Monday.

The event, which will be held at Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center, is open to the public.

Dream top Fever in two overtimes

In Indianapolis, Angel McCoughtry hit a 3-pointer with 8.8 seconds to play in the second overtime, and the Atlanta Dream beat the Indiana Fever 90-88.

McCoughtry led the Dream (2-0) with 27 points.

College Baseball

Gamecocks win series with rival

In Nashville, Tenn., eighth-ranked South Carolina scored four runs in the eighth inning and beat No. 9 Vanderbilt 6-3 to win the three-game series.

The Gamecocks are 42-14, 18-12 Southeastern Con­ference. Vanderbilt is 40-16, 17-13 SEC.

• In Clemson, S.C., Jay Baum’s double with two outs in the 13th inning lifted Clemson to a 10-9 victory over Boston College.

The Tigers (34-22, 15-14 Atlantic Coast Conference) won the series 2-1 against the Eagles, whose season ended at 22-33, 10-20 ACC.

• In Athens, Ga., Georgia defeated Kentucky 11-10 to secure the final spot in next week’s SEC Tournament. The Bulldogs are 26-28-1, 11-18-1 SEC.

Hockey

Russians go to 5-0 in Belarus

In Minsk, Belarus, Russia secured a quarterfinals berth at the world championship with a 4-1 win over Latvia to remain unbeaten.

Russia won for the fifth consecutive time.
