Area pair claim four state titles

In Jefferson, Ga., Grove­town senior Darius Watkins won two state championships Saturday in the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAA meet.

Watkins first took the 100 meters with a time of 10.49 seconds, edging William Johnson, of Lakeside-DeKalb (10.50). The 2013 state champion in the 200, Watkins defended his crown, finishing first in 21.27.

In Class AAA, Washington County’s Quintaveon Poole won the state title in the 400 meters (47.30) and 200 meters (21.62).

Golf

Jags finish 11th, fail to advance

In Cle Elum, Wash., the Georgia Regents women shot a final-round 311 and finished 11th in the NCAA Division I West Regional on the Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort.

The Jaguars needed to finish in the top eight to advance to the NCAA Championships, but finished eight strokes out of eighth place at 922.

Clemson shot 315 and finished 13th at 929.

Southern Cal won the regional with 876.

Arizona State’s Noemi Jimenez shot 72 to finish at 213 and claim medalist honors by two strokes.

Casey Kennedy also had 72 and tied for 17th at 225 to lead Georgia Regents. Eunice Yi (78) tied for 22nd at 226, Josefine Nyqvist (81) tied for 61st at 235, Jessica Haigwood (80) tied for 68th at 236 and Shannon Pak (81) finished 122nd.

Former Columbia County resident Ashlan Ramsey (75) tied for 39th for Clemson at 230. Former Strom Thurmond standout McKenzie Talbert (80) tied for 87th at 239 and North Augusta’s Jessica Hoang (84) tied for 118th at 252.

Jackets handed sixth loss in row

In Hickory, N.C., Ronald Guzman singled in two runs in the eighth and two pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout as the Hickory Crawdads beat the Augusta GreenJackets 3-0 Saturday.

The GreenJackets have dropped six in a row.

College Baseball

Ex-Panther helps knock off Pacers

In Aiken, Matt Wisniewski hit a three-run homer and Clayton Miller also drove in three runs as Armstrong Atlantic State beat 11th-ranked USC Aiken 11-7 Saturday in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

Miller, a former Lakeside standout, finished 2 for 5 for the Pirates (28-19).

Ryan Metzler drove in three runs for USC Aiken (36-15).

Armstrong Atlantic will face either Columbus State or Montevallo in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m. today.

In Saturday’s other games, Lander beat Francis Marion 14-4 and Georgia College downed UNC Pembroke 13-7.

Lander and Georgia College will play at 10 a.m. today.

The finals are scheduled for 5 p.m. today.

• In Columbia, Jack Wynkoop and three relievers limited Missouri to one run as 11th-ranked South Carolina beat Missouri 3-1.

• In Oxford, Miss., Robert Tyler tossed a three-hit shutout to lead Georgia to a 2-0 win over 11th-ranked Ole Miss.

• In South Bend, Ind., Daniel Gossett pitched a four-hit shutout in No. 24 Clemson’s 8-0 victory over Notre Dame.

• In Charlottesville, Va., top-ranked Virginia rallied to beat Georgia Tech 4-3 in 11 innings.

• In Statesboro, Ga., Stryker Brown homered in the bottom of the ninth to give Georgia a 1-0 walk-off victory over Western Carolina.
