Pacers swept in conference play

In Aiken, unbeaten and nationally-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State swept USC Aiken 3-0 on Friday in a Peach Belt Conference match.

The 23rd-ranked Pirates won the sets 26-28, 15-25 and 27-29. They improved to 15-0 and 7-0 in the conference.

Emily Wylie had 12 kills and Megan Pando 28 assists for the winners.

Taylor Stratton had nine kills and nine digs and Sheila Walsh had 18 assists for the Pacers (12-6, 5-3 conference).

Golf

Ex-Jags advance to second stage

In Vero Beach, Fla., a pair of former Augusta State golfers have made it through the first stage of the Web.com Tour’s Qualifying Tournament at Quail Valley Country Club.

Mitch Krywulycz tied for sixth place and former teammate Taylor Floyd tied for 17th place. The top 30 advanced to the second stage, which will be held at six sites from Nov. 12-15.

Krywulycz, who was tied for third place entering the final round, closed with even-par 71. Floyd, who was tied for 22nd place after three rounds, shot 70.

Baseball

Masters City to hold tournament

The second annual Save 2nd Base Classic baseball tournament will be held today at the Masters City fields.

Action will start at 9 a.m. The age groups will be 12-under, 13-under and 18-under through senior.

Admission is $6 and part of the proceeds benefit breast cancer awareness.

‘The Big One’ set for Swainsboro

Swainsboro Raceway’s The Big One and Tractor Tire mud bogging programs will be held Oct. 26.

The Late Model winner will pocket $3,000 and have a guaranteed starting spot and his entry fee paid in the upcoming Turkey 100 on Nov. 28. There will be racing in all classes at The Big One.

Nadal, Djokovic continue to win

In Shanghai, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic overcame tough challenges in their quarterfinals at the Shanghai Masters and moved a step closer to a possible showdown in the final.

Top-ranked Nadal saved three set points and finally closed out a 20-minute tiebreak in the first set against Stanislas Wawrinka before winning 7-6 (10), 6-1.

Djokovic, the defending champion, rallied past Gael Monfils 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4.

• In Linz, Austria, top-seeded Angelique Kerber defeated Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the Generali Ladies to secure the final spot in the season-ending WTA Championships.

Basketball

Huskies making strides off court

Connecticut’s men’s basketball team, which was forced to sit out of last year’s postseason because it failed to meet NCAA academic requirements in years past, has submitted a perfect academic progress rate for last season.

The score, which covers the 2012-13 school year, won’t be official until the NCAA releases its annual academic progress report in May

• Detroit Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey had surgery on his broken right thumb.

He will wear a splint on the thumb for two weeks before being re-evaluated.
