Jackets record 12th-inning win
In Lexington, Ky., Eliezer Zambrano’s two-out single in the 12th inning lifted the Augusta GreenJackets to a 2-1 victory over the Lexington Legends on Wednesday afternoon.
Zambrano’s single scored Alberto Robles, who opened the inning with a single.
Charles Jones had Augusta’s other RBI. It came on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, giving Jones 45 RBI this season.
Augusta starter Kendry Flores had a career-high 15 strikeouts. He went eight innings, allowing six hits and one run. He didn’t walk a batter.
GRU to start year with home event
The Georgia Regents University men’s basketball team will play seven home games before Christmas.
The Jaguars open the season with the Health Center Credit Union Challenge, Nov. 9-10, at Christenberry Fieldhouse. GRU will face Southeast Region foe Tusculum at 7 p.m. on Nov. 9. The Jaguars then play host to Anderson at 4 p.m. the following day.
• Defending champion Armstrong Atlantic State has been voted to repeat as Peach Belt Conference volleyball champion.
In a preseason coach’s poll, the Lady Pirates received seven first-place
votes and finished with 79 points.
Georgia Regents University was fourth with 51 points and USC Aiken was fifth with 49.
Area senior team finishes second
In Ball Ground, Ga., a team featuring area golfers Kenny Larry and Glen Hurt finished second in the Senior Invitational at Hawks Ridge Country Club.
Larry, of Augusta, and North Augusta’s Hurt shot 67-66 in the event.
• The annual Regions Bank Amateur Series Matches will be held Sept. 14-15 at Belle Meade Country Club in Thomson.
The top 12 players from both Georgia and South Carolina, based on their finishes in the Regions tournaments this year, will qualify for the matches.
The matches, which started in 1988, are tied 12-12-1.
There are still two tournaments remaining for players to earn points for top 20-finishes – this weekend’s Jones Creek Classic and the Camellia Classic at Belle Meade on Aug. 31-Sept. 1.

Sharapova out of Open with injury
Maria Sharapova pulled out of the U.S. Open on Wednesday because of a right shoulder injury.
Sharapova has played only one match on tour since her second-round loss at Wimbledon in June.

Japan rallies for win over Mexico
In South Williamsport, Pa., Kazuki Ishida homered to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning to snap a 2-all tie and spark a game-changing rally, and Japan beat Mexico 5-2 to earn a berth in the international championship game of the Little League World Series.
