Jackets drop two on road to Gnats

In Savannah, Ga., the host Sand Gnats swept a doubleheader from the Augusta GreenJackets on Saturday, winning the first game 3-2 and the second 3-1.

Savannah scored twice with two outs in its final at-bat off Tyler Mizenko (1-4) in the seven-inning opener. Cole Frenzel had the game-winning hit, a single to left that scored Stefan Sabol.

Shawn Payne homered for the GreenJackets.

In the nightcap, Matthew Koch (6-4) allowed only one hit, a triple to left by Payne leading off the seventh and final inning. Payne scored on a sac fly by Trevor Brown.

Frenzel had two hits and two RBI to lead the Sand Gnats.

Justin Schumer (3-7) took the loss.

Pope’s out front at Gordon Lakes

It didn’t take Jeff Pope long to get back on his game in the Regions Bank Amateur Series.

Six days after a disappointing showing in the defense of his Augusta City Amateur title, the North Augustan rebounded to take the first-round lead in the Ping Regions Invitational at Gordon Lakes Golf Course on Saturday.

Pope, the 2012 Regions Bank Amateur Series Player of the Year who has two wins this season, opened with 3-under-par 69. He’s one shot ahead of Steve Foss and three in front of a group of five golfers at 72, including Perry Watson Memorial winner Lewis White.

In the senior division, North Augusta’s Tommy Carpenter also leads with 69 in his bid for a third title this year. He’s one shot ahead of Chuck Withers, who is playing on his home course and is a former senior division winner in this event.

Mike Jackson and Jeff Roberts shot 73.

• In Columbia, Georgia rolled to victory in the Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match at Forest Lake Club.

Georgia, which led the match-play event by five points after the first round, ended up winning 111/2 to 41/2.

Both area golfers lost their matches on Saturday. Georgia’s Carter Mobley, of Waynesboro, fell 6 and 5 to RJ Keur, of North Charleston, S.C.
to finish at 1-1 in the matches. Aiken’s Alex Handy lost to Tyler Hanson, of Albany, 2-up. Handy finished 0-2.

Ex-Bulldog earns berth in the final

In Atlanta, top-seeded John Isner beat seventh-seeded Lleyton Hewitt 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5) on Saturday to reach the Atlanta Open final.

The former Georgia star will play Kevin Anderson, who beat Ryan Harrison 6-3, 7-6 (3).

• In Gstaad, Switzerland, Mikhail Youzhny will play unseeded Robin Haase in the Swiss Open final after both won their semifinals.

Youzhny downed Victor Hanescu 6-3, 6-3 and Haase beat Feliciano Lopez, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

• In Stanford, Calif., Dominika Cibulkova advanced to her second WTA Tour final this year, coasting past Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-0 in the Bank of the West Classic.

Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska was scheduled to face Jamie Hampton in the late semifinal.

Johnson retains flyweight crown

In Seattle, Demetrious Johnson used an armbar on John Moraga late in the fifth round and successfully defended his UFC flyweight championship with a submission victory Saturday night.

The co-main event saw Rory MacDonald take a unanimous decision over Jake Ellenberger in a welterweight fight.
