East has lead in Challenge Match

In Statham, Ga., the East Section leads the Junior Sectional Challenge Match with 29.5 points after the first round at The Georgia Club.

The low round of the day came from Lorenzo Elbert, Jr., of the Northwest Section who fired 5-under-par 67 to lead the individual standings.

The Northwest team is second place with 25 points.



AIBA moves to suspend England

The governing body of boxing has provisionally suspended the Amateur Boxing Association of England and asked its disciplinary panel to review the case.

Governing body AIBA says it “could not tolerate the serious violations committed.” AIBA did not specify details.

The suspension bars English boxers, coaches and officials from competitions six weeks before the junior world championships in Ukraine. The senior worlds will be held Oct. 11-27 in Kazakhstan.

AIBA was already investigating “political conflicts” involving England and its other British member federations.

This month, AIBA withdrew the British Lionhearts franchise from its World Series of Boxing professional competition.



FIFA lifts ban on Cameroon team

FIFA has lifted Cameroon’s suspension from international soccer, allowing the African country to play a key World Cup qualifier against Libya. FIFA imposed the ban July 4, citing government interference at the Cameroon Football Association following disputed elections last month. FIFA says it lifted the sanction after an emergency management committee was “able to take up its duties” Monday.

A resolution was expected after FIFA President Sepp Blatter hosted a Cameroon delegation last week.

Cameroon is home against Libya on Sept. 6.



Babcock to lead Canadian squad

Mike Babcock will return as coach of Canada’s Olympic hockey team.

The Detroit Red Wings coach will have the St. Louis Blues’ Ken Hitchcock, Dallas Stars’ Lindy Ruff and Boston Bruins’ Claude Julien as assistants at next year’s Sochi Games, Hockey Canada announced Monday.

In Saratoga Springs, NY, Bigger Is Bettor won by a head in a four-horse battle to the wire to take the $100,000 Evan Shipman Stakes at Saratoga Race Course for horses bred in New York.

Bigger Is Bettor earned $60,000 for owners Chester and Mary Broman.



Greek star takes open water title

Spyridon Gianniotis, of Greece, defended his title in the grueling 10-kilometer open water event at the swimming world championships Monday, surging ahead on the final lap to avoid a sprint with Olympic champion Oussama Mellouli.

Gianniotis finished in 1 hour, 49 minutes, 11.8 seconds in the waters of Barcelona’s harbor.

Thomas Lurz, of Germany, was second, 2.7 seconds behind, and Mellouli was third, 7.4 back.

China’s Li Shixin defended his title in the men’s 1-meter springboard Monday, giving the world’s top diving power its fourth straight world championship.
