Olsen prevails in Southern Am
In The Woodlands, Texas, Zachary Olsen won the 107th Southern Amateur on Saturday, birdieing the final hole of regulation and the first hole of a playoff.
Olsen, a 19-year-old who won the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley in 2012, made a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th to get into the playoff with Joey Garber and Sam Love, then won with a 20-footer.
Olsen, who will attend Oklahoma State, shot 1-under-par 71 to match Garber and Love at 12-under 276 on the Nicklaus Course at The Club at Carlton Woods. Garber, a Georgia senior, shot 69, and Love, a senior at Alabama Birmingham, had 66.
Georgia Regents University golfer Maverick Antcliff shot 74 and tied for 60th at 295.
Olsen received a spot next year in the PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational.
• In Conover, N.C., former Augusta State golfer Taylor Floyd shot 5-under-par 67 to finish seventh in the eGolf Tour’s HGM Hotels Classic at Rock Barn.
Floyd, who began the day five back, finished at 12-under 276, three shots behind winner Jesse Hutchins. Hutchins closed with 67 to beat Garland Green (69) by a stroke.
Major Manning, another former Jaguar, shot 73 and tied for 16th at 281.
Star lineman is Georgia-bound
Defensive tackle Lamont Gaillard committed to Georgia on Saturday during a visit to the school’s campus, according to ESPN.com.
The 6-foot-4, 300-pound Gaillard, of Fayetteville, N.C., picked Georgia over offers from Alabama, Clemson and Florida, among others.
Florida was considered the leader at one point for Gaillard, the No. 2 defensive tackle in the country.
Giants’ Hill is hit with suspension
New York Giants safety Will Hill has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse, the league said Saturday.
This is the second time Hill has been banned by the NFL. Last season, Hill served a four-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substances policy. Hill said he took the attention deficit drug Adderall.
Qualifier shocks Federer in semis
In Hamburg, Germany, Roger Federer lost to qualifier Federico Delbonis 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4) Saturday in the semifinals of the German Tennis Championships.
In the final, Delbonis will play Fabio Fognini. Fognini defeated third-seeded Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 7-6 (1).
• In Bastad, Sweden, Serena Williams defeated Klara Zakopalova 6-0, 6-4 in the semifinals of the Swedish Open.
In the other semifinal, Johanna Larsson rallied past Flavia Pennetta 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Williams will meet Larsson in today’s final of the clay-court tournament.
• In Bogota, Colombia, hometown favorite Alejandro Falla advanced to the Claro Open Colombia final, beating Vasek Pospisil 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4.
Falla will face Ivo Karlovic today. Karlovic beat second-seeded Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3.
Panama wallops Cuba in Gold Cup
In Atlanta, Panama beat 10-man Cuba 6-1 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals on Saturday.
Panama, which has three wins and a draw in the Gold Cup, advanced to the semifinals next week in Dallas.
