Jackets get win on Rapp’s single
In Charleston, S.C., Joseph Rapp drove in the go-ahead run on a single in the ninth inning, and the Augusta GreenJackets held on for a 2-1 win over the Charleston RiverDogs on Sunday.
Brandon Farley (4-3) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to get the win.
The GreenJackets took three out of five in the series and finished the first half of the South Atlantic League season in fourth place in the Southern Division.
N.C. State opens with rout of rival
In Omaha, Neb., North Carolina State’s Carlos Rodon pitched eight shutout innings and the Wolfpack knocked ACC Pitcher of the Year Kent Emanuel out of the game early in an 8-1 victory in their College World Series opener Sunday.
Rodon (10-2) held the No. 1 national seed Tar Heels hitless into the fifth inning. He allowed five hits and struck out eight.
It was the sophomore left-hander’s second straight dominating performance against the Tar Heels. Three weeks ago he allowed one hit and struck out 14 in 10 innings in a 2-1, 18-inning loss in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.
Federer captures first title of year
In Halle, Germany, Roger Federer won his first title of the year, overcoming a sluggish start to beat unseeded Mikhail Youzhny 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 at the Gerry Weber Open on Sunday.
The 31-year-old Federer won his first title since Cincinnati in August and his sixth in Halle, the first since 2008.
Four of Federer’s seven Wimbledon titles have come after victories in Halle.
• In London, top-seeded Andy Murray rallied to beat defending champion Marin Cilic 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 on Sunday to win the Queen’s Club tournament for the third time.
It is the 27th career title for Murray and his second of the season after winning at Miami in March.
Irishman claims victory in playoff
In Saint-Omer, France, Simon Thornton won the beat Tjaart Van der Walt with a par on the first hole of a playoff in the Najeti Hotels Open for the Irishman’s first European Tour title.
Thornton and Van der Walt each shot 1-under 70 to finish at 5-under 279.
Seve Benson closed with 70 to finish a stroke back.
Balotelli propels Italy past Mexico
In Rio de Janeiro, Mario Balotelli scored in the 78th minute to lead Italy past Mexico 2-1 in the Confederations Cup.
His goal broke a 1-1 tie in the Group A game, the first official match at renovated Maracana Stadium.
• In Recife, Brazil, Spain dominated its Confederations Cup opener against Uruguay, winning 2-1 on first-half goals by Pedro and Roberto Soldado.
McCoughtry lifts red-hot Atlanta
In Atlanta, Angel McCoughtry scored 23 points, and Erika de Souza had 16 points and 11 rebounds to help the Atlanta Dream beat the Chicago Sky 88-74 on Sunday.
Tiffany Hayes also had 16 points for Atlanta (5-1), and Jasmine Thomas added 13. Elena Delle Donne led Chicago (4-2) with 25 points, Allie Quigley had 14, and Sylvia Fowles finished with 10 rebounds.
