Home runs help ignite Greenville

In Greenville, S.C., David Chester hit a home run and drove in four runs, Mookie Betts also went deep and the Greenville Drive earned a 10-6 win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Friday night.

Jesus Galindo went deep for the GreenJackets, who fell to 3-6 in May.

Paine set to hold football tryouts

Paine College will hold football tryouts today at Laney’s stadium.

It is open to 2013 high school graduates, players ready for fall enrollment and current Paine College students.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at the football field. Proof of a current physical is required, and there is a $10 registration fee for the tryout.

• In Auburn, Ala., Augusta State’s Casey Kennedy shot 2-under-par 70 and is tied for 22nd place at the NCAA East Regional at Auburn University Club.

Kennedy is at 1-over 145 for the tournament, which ends today. She is 11 strokes behind Alabama’s Stephanie Meadows. Natalie Wille shot 73 and is tied for 74th.

The top two individuals not on an advancing team move on to the NCAA Championships.

• In Port St. Lucie, Fla., Paine College is in seventh place at the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship.

Carlos Solis shot 73 to lead the way for the Lions at PGA Golf Club.

Giants’ trophy to stop in Augusta

The World Series trophy will come to Augusta for the second time in three years.

The trophy will be at Lake Olmstead Stadium for Tuesday’s 7:05 p.m. game against the Rome Braves. Fans can get a picture with the trophy at the team’s merchandise store beginning at 7:30. Gates open at 6.

High Schools

Lakeside runner finishes in third

In Albany, Ga., Lakeside’s Sarah Bowles finished third in the Class AAAAA 3,200-meter run at the Georgia High School Association Girls State Meet.

Bowles had a time of 11 minutes, 29 seconds. Alex Cameron, of Dunwoody, won the event in 11:10.

Aquinas’ Shannon Fair finished fourth in the Class A Private 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:16. Naomi Grand Pierre, of Whitfield, won in 5:05.

• Greenbrier golfer David Hemman signed with Georgia College and State; Greenbrier’s Steven Maier will play baseball for North Greenville; and Grovetown’s Josalyn Leverett-Scott will play basketball for Albany State.

Kyle Busch takes Nationwide race

In Darlington, S.C., Kyle Busch took the lead from Joey Logano 18 laps from the end to win his fifth Nationwide race this season and second in three years at Darlington Raceway on Friday night.

Tennis

Nadal rallies for quarterfinal win

In Madrid, Rafael Nadal rallied past David Ferrer 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-0 in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open.

Serena Williams struggled before defeating Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 0-6, 7-5, and second-ranked Maria Sharapova joined her in the semifinals after easing by Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 6-4.
