Pacers 7th as regional begins
In Howley-in-the-Hills, Fla., USC Aiken is on the bubble after the first round of the 54-hole NCAA Division II South/Southeast regional.
The third-ranked Pacers are seventh after 7-over-par 295 at El Campeon Golf Course.
The top seven teams after Wednesday’s final round advance to the national tournament in late May in Hershey, Pa.
Barry is the team leader after 4-under-par 284.
USC Aiken got 70 from Matt Atkins and 72 from J.P. Solis, but had to count 76 by Mark Dickson and 77 by Hayden Letien. Taylor Welborn had the noncounting score of 81.
Atkins is in second place in the individual race, one shot behind Nova Southeastern’s Ricardo Celia.
• While Augusta State’s men’s team missed out on postseason play, it will have two representatives in the NCAA Division I Regionals.
Junior Alex Wennstam and freshman Maverick Antcliff will play in postseason as individuals.
Antcliff is ranked No. 131 in the Golfweek collegiate individual rankings, while Wennstam is ranked No. 186. They will play May 16-18 in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Jaguars failed to qualify for postseason play when it fell one win short of the .500 rule.
Chipper is guest speaker tonight
Former Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones will be the guest speaker for the Augusta Sports Council’s 22nd annual Greater Augusta Medals for Excellence in Sports Awards banquet tonight.
The G.A.M.E.S. banquet, held at the Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center, will honor area amateur athletes and award two scholarships to rising college freshmen.
Tickets are $40 for Augusta Sports Council members and $50 for nonmembers.

Cross Creek gets first state title
In Jefferson, Ga., last weekend, Cross Creek won the boys Class AAAA 1,600-meter relay in the GHSA state meet for boys track and field.
Lee Hembrick, Trevor Mixon, Christian Santiago and Devon Diamond won it with a time of 3:26.74.
It was the first state track title for Cross Creek, which was established in 1999.
Pacquiao returns against brawler
Manny Pacquiao, seeking to get his mojo back after being knocked out by rival Juan Manuel Marquez in December, will return to action to face brawler Brandon Rios this fall, Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz told ESPN.com.
The fight, the first for Filipino icon Pacquiao outside the United States since 2006, will take place in Macau, China on Nov. 24, which is Nov. 23 in the United States.
