Mountain Lions sweep Jaguars
In Young Harris, Ga., Augusta State finally scored some runs, just not enough of them.
The Jaguars, limited to one run in their previous two games, lost a doubleheader to Young Harris on Saturday, 10-8 and 12-5.
Before the Jaguars scored four times in the third inning of Game 1, they had gone 15 innings without a run.
With the two losses, Augusta State has lost eight in a row and 14 of its past 15.
In Game 1, the Mountain Lions exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning.
Jeff Rice and Justin Mee had homers and two RBI each for Augusta State. Seth Foster and Logan South also had two RBI.
The Mountain Lions had two big innings in Game 2, scoring four times in the fifth and five times in the eighth.
For Augusta State, Hunter Boose had a two-RBI double and Rice had two hits and a RBI.
Augusta State is now 10-25 and 3-15 in the Peach Belt Conference. Young Harris is 15-15 and 5-13.
• In Montevallo, Ala., the Falcons of Montevallo won their Peach Belt Conference weekend series with No. 6 USC Aiken, taking the finale 6-1 on Saturday.
The teams split a doubleheader on Friday.
Montevallo starter Josh Clemen (4-2) was the story in Saturday’s game. He pitched a complete game, striking out seven and allowing four hits.
USC Aiken scored its run in the ninth inning to avoid the shutout.
USC Aiken is 27-7 and 13-4 in the Peach Belt Conference. Montevallo, which is ranked No. 28, is 23-12 and 13-8.
• In Columbia, LB Dantzler homered twice, including the game-winning blow in the bottom of the eighth inning as No. 14 South Carolina beat No. 16 Texas A&M 6-3 on Saturday to sweep the three-game series.
South Carolina won Friday’s middle game of the series 6-4 behind former Greenbrier star Nolan Belcher.
Belcher went 8⅓ innings and allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits to improve to 5-2 on the year.
After Saturday’s win, the Gamecocks are 22-6 and 5-4 in the Southeastern Conference.
Augusta State falls on the road
In Americus, Ga., Avery Purser’s RBI single in the fifth inning off Haley Birkle lifted Georgia Southwestern to a 2-1 victory over Augusta State in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
The Lady Hurricanes completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
In Game 1, Lauren Yeargen had Augusta State’s RBI.
The Lady Jaguars’ Macy Terry had four of her team’s eight hits in Game 2. Augusta State’s RBI were by Brooke Stephens and Laura Brown.
Augusta State is 14-24.
Rebel star will run for Patriots
Hephzibah’s Justin Woodard has signed with the Francis Marion Patriots.
Woodard helped the Rebels boys finish seventh at the Class AAAA state meet this year.
Woodard is a two-time team MVP.
Ledford rallies for eGolf victory
In Southport, N.C., Bryce Ledford rallied from five shots back at the start of the round to win the eGolf Tour’s Championship at St. James Plantation by two shots.
The Chattanooga, Tenn., shot 6-under 66 on Saturday.
Aiken’s Stephen Poole had a 76-78 weekend and finished tied for 46th place at 300.
