Lady Pacers win in quarterfinals

In Morrow, Ga., Mackenzie Reese came off the bench to score a career-high 20 points and lead the USC Aiken women’s basketball team to a 94-71 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne in the NCAA Southeast Regional quarterfinals on Friday.

Daniela Tarailo had 19 points, Porsha Martin added 18 points and Brittany Hill had 10 assists for the Lady Pacers (21-7).

USC Aiken will take on No. 1-ranked Clayton State in the semifinals at 7 tonight. The Lady Lakers beat Mount Olive 91-58 on Friday night for their 30th consecutive victory.

• At Lake Olmstead Stadium, Lander starter Dylan Wolchik struck out 10 in eight innings as the Bearcats beat Augusta State 7-1 in baseball.

Augusta State freshman Logan South went 3 for 4 with an RBI.

RiverHawks fail to hold big lead

In Pensacola, Fla., another strong second period wasn’t enough to carry the Augusta RiverHawks to victory.

A night after scoring six second-period goals in a win over Huntsville, Augusta had three more goals in the second period on Friday to take a 3-1 lead, but couldn’t hold on, losing 4-3 to Pensacola in a shootout.

Justin MacDonald had the game-winner for the Ice Flyers, who got a hat trick from Dan Buccella.

Augusta’s second-period goals were by Marcus Pryde, Jesse Echternach and Drew Baker. Taylor Larsen had assists on the goals by Pryde and Echternach.

Augusta (18-29-4) lost ground to eighth-place Huntsville in the race for the final SPHL playoff spot. The Havoc (20-26-6) beat Fayetteville 4-1 on Friday.

Pair share lead in Kandy Waters

In Edgefield County, Danny Evelyn and Alex Rowland are the clubhouse leaders in the NGA Tour’s weather-plagued Kandy Waters Memorial Classic, which had another frost delay Friday.

Evelyn had 3-under-par 69 and Rowland 72. They are at 2-under 142 at Mount Vintage Plantation. The second round will be completed this morning, followed by the start of the third round.

Garland Smith, of Johnston and former Augusta State golfer Wallace Booth did not complete their second rounds. Smith opened with 72 and Booth had 73.

Partial Regions schedule is set

The dates for half of the 10 Regions Bank Amateur Series tournaments for 2013 have been confirmed.

They are: the Sunbelt Nissan Golf Capital Invitational on April 27-28 at Mount Vintage Plantation; the North Augusta Exchange Club/Persimmon Hill Classic on June 15-16 at Persimmon Hill Golf Club; the Goshen Golf Classic at Goshen Plantation on June 22-23; the Orville White Cup on Aug. 3-4 at Midland Valley Country Club and the Jones Creek Classic on Aug. 17-18 at Jones Creek Golf Club.

High School Basketball

Showcase today at Patriots Park

The ABR Live Spring Showcase 2013 will be held today at Patriots Park.

The event, which features some of the area’s best boys and girls high school basketball players, begins with 9 a.m. games.

The collected talent will be split up into more than a dozen boys teams and five girls teams, according to
augustabasketball.com.
