Augusta’s hopes dealt huge blow

In Huntsville, Ala., Aaron McGill helped deal a serious blow to his former team’s playoff hopes Friday night.

The former Augusta RiverHawk scored two goals as the Huntsville Havoc picked up a 6-2 win, widening the gap in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the SPHL.

Stuart Stefan added two goals for the Havoc, who now have a five-point lead over the RiverHawks.

Bradshaw set to speak at dinner

Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw will speak at The Salvation Army’s inaugural “Doing The Most Good” dinner May 10 at the Kroc Center.

Bradshaw led the Steelers to four Super Bowl championships and now is an award-winning broadcaster for Fox. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Seating is limited to event sponsors and table hosts, and no individual tickets will be sold.

• Hephzibah football player Marcus Smith signed a letter of intent to play at Walsh University in Ohio.

The Division II school is part of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Milewski’s gem powers Pacers

In Aiken, Ryan Milewski pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout to lead No. 5 USC Aiken to a 3-0 win over Flagler on Friday.

Milewski had five strikeouts and allowed just two walks for the Pacers, who have won eight of their past nine games.

• In Athens, Hunter Cole drove in four runs, Kyle Farmer had five of Georgia’s 21 hits and the Bulldogs romped to a 14-2 win over Alabama-Birmingham.

Nelson Ward added four hits and two RBI for Georgia.

• In Atlanta, A.J. Murray and Zane Evans hit home runs as Georgia Tech cruised to a 13-1 win over Rutgers.

3-pointers lead UCLA to victory

In Tempe, Ariz., Kari Korver scored a career-high 17 points – including all five of UCLA’s 3-pointers – and the 17th-ranked Bruins defeated Arizona State 58-50 Friday night.

Top-ranked Irmo takes state title

In Columbia, Justin McKie had 20 points and 10 rebounds to help top-ranked Irmo earn a 65-46 win over Goose Creek in the South Carolina Class AAAA boys state championship game on Friday.

The Yellow Jackets capped off a perfect season at 29-0.

• In Columbia, Rose Robinson made three free throws in the final 9 seconds to propel Dutch Fork to a 46-43 victory over Dorman in the Class AAAA girls basketball championship Friday night.

Federer upset by Berdych in Dubai

In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Tomas Berdych saved three match points before upsetting defending champion Roger Federer 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4 to earn a spot in the final of the Dubai Championships against Novak Djokovic.

Top-ranked Djokovic rallied past fourth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the other semifinal.
