RiverHawks roll past Surge again
In Biloxi, Miss., the Augusta RiverHawks swept their two-game weekendseries with Mississippi, stopping the Surge 6-1 on Saturday night.
The RiverHawks, who scored three goals in the third period in Friday’s 4-2 victory, had three more in the first period Saturday.
Casey Mignone added another one in the second period to make it 4-0.
Taylor Larsen had two of Augusta’s other goals. Kyle Watson, Matt Auffrey and Dennis Sicard had one goal each for Augusta (14-23-3).
Custer is sharp in Jaguars’ win
Augusta State starter Kip Custer gave up one run in seven innings of work as Augusta State beat West Georgia 7-2 at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Saturday.
Custer (2-0) gave up six hits before being relieved by Zack Breaux, who went the final two innings, giving up two hits and a run.
Hunter Boose had two doubles and Kevin Dodson had one with 2 RBI for the Jaguars (3-1).
JD Sabo had four hits with three stolen bases for the Jaguars.
The teams play a doubleheader today at Lake Olmstead Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
• In Aiken, fifth-ranked USC Aiken evened the score with Carson-Newman, winning 6-0 on Saturday behind Grayson Smith and Ryan Metzler.
In the first game of the series, Carson-Newman won 8-0 on Friday.
Smith and Metzler each homered and had two RBI as the Pacers improved to 4-1.
Three USC Aiken pitchers limited the visitors to four hits.
Starter Ben Black gave up one hit in two innings, winner Derek Beasley, of Harlem, gave up three hits in six innings while striking out seven and Taylor Grover pitched a hitless final inning.
The teams close out the series with a 1 p.m. game today.
Lady Pacers get split in twinbill
In Aiken, Sarah Montei made the most of her first hit for USC Aiken.
The freshman center fielder delivered the game-winning RBI with a fifth inning single to help the Lady Pacers beat Catawba 3-2 and earn a doubleheader split.
Catawba won the opener 5-1 as Mollie Kovalcin had two homers, including a grand slam for five RBI.
Lindsey Jones accounted for USC Aiken’s run in Game 1 with a fifth-inning homer.
In Game 2, USC Aiken’s Taylor Morgan pitched a complete game and Brittney Williamson had a solo homer.
Kaitlyn White went 3 for 4 for USC Aiken with an RBI.
• In Hickory, N.C., Augusta State remained winless after being swept by Lenior-Rhyne in a doubleheader, losing 7-1 and 1-0.
Junior Macy Terry scored Augusta State’s only run after opening the third inning in Game 1 with a double and later scoring on a fielding error.
The Lady Jaguars dropped to 0-3.
Freshman takes fourth in Atlanta
In Atlanta, Davidson Fine Arts’ freshman Lindsay Wallace came fourth in the girls 500 freestyle and in eighth for the 200 freestyle at the GHSA State Swimming and Diving Championships finals.
Aquinas’ Jackie Jeschke was fifth in the girls 100 backstroke and sixth in the 200 IM.
Evans’ Mitchell Petras finished sixth in the boys 200 IM.
