ABA will have team in Augusta

After a four-year absence, pro basketball will be coming back to Augusta.

The American Basketball Association announced Wednesday that the Georgia-Lina Hurricanes will be based in Augusta and will be part of the league starting with the 2013-14 season.

The last Augusta minor league pro basketball team – the Augusta Groove – lasted one season, starting in early 2009.

The new team is owned by the Elite Sports Group of Augusta, under the control of Bryan Beaver and Jerald Smith.

Beaver, who is the chairman/founder of Elite Sports Group, will be the coach.

College Basketball

Lions top Allen behind Morgan

Behind the strong play of freshman Sean Morgan, Paine College opened its home schedule with an 86-72 victory over Allen on Wednesday night at Richmond Academy.

Morgan had 15 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks for the Lions (1-2).

Darius Smith led Paine with 19 points on 8 of 12 from the field and 2 for 2 from the free-throw line.

• In Winston-Salem, N.C., USC Aiken couldn’t recover from a dreadful start and lost to Winston-Salem State, 79-70.

The Pacers (2-1) hit 9 of 29 shots in the first half and made only 5 of 16 free throws to fall behind 41-23.

Ronald Zimmerman led USC Aiken with 22 points. Santoine Butler added 15 points to go along with 11 rebounds.

Golf

Norlander ninth after first round

In La Quinta, Calif., Henrik Norlander and Vaughn Taylor are off to strong starts in the PGA Tour Qualifying Tourna­ment.

Norlander, a former Augusta State golfer, shot 5-under-par 67 and is tied for ninth place.

Taylor, a PGA Tour veteran with two career wins, had 68 and is tied for 20th.

There are still five more rounds to go at PGA West, where players will determine their playing fate for 2013. The top 25 finishers and ties from the 172 starters will earn PGA Tour playing privileges, or tour cards, for the 2013 season.

The next 50 will earn Web.com Tour cards for 2013 and the remainder receive conditional status on the Web.com Tour.

Of the other area players, Patrick Reed is tied for 50th at 70, Kevin Kisner is tied for 82nd after 71, Stephen Poole is tied for 111th after 72, Scott Parel is tied for 136th after 73 and Scott Brown is tied for 169th after 78.

• In Braselton, Ga., two area players finished second in their age groups in the Hurricane Junior Tour’s North Georgia Junior Open at Chateau Elan Golf Club.

In the 15-18 age group, 16-year-old Augustan Joey Lawrence shot 77-76–153 to finish five shots behind Shea Sylvester (74-74–148), of Roswell.

In the 11-14 age group, Hunter Dunagan, of Martinez, shot 76-74–150 to finish three shots behind S.M. Lee (77-70–147), of Buford, Ga.

Also in the 15-18 group, Evans’ Kristopher Douglass tied for 16th place after rounds of 77-86–163.

Football

Meadowbrook trio in regionals

Zalre Stewart, Kyrie Williams and Sorriana Thomas, of Augusta’s Meadowbrook Elementary, will be in the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick’s southeastern regionals at halftime of tonight’s Falcons-Saints game at the Georgia Dome.

Stewart and Williams are in the 10-11 age group while Thomas in the 6-7 age group.
