Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones still hurting

Receiver Julio Jones was limited in his return to practice Thursday for the Atlanta Falcons.

Three defensive starters were held out – linebacker Sean Weatherspoon (right ankle), cornerback Asante Samuel (shoulder) and nose tackle Peria Jerry (quadriceps).

A sore right ankle has bothered Jones since the Falcons’ loss at New Orleans two weeks ago. He missed practice last week but started in the home win over Arizona, catching three passes for 33 yards.

Weatherspoon returned in a limited role Wednesday for the first time since spraining his right ankle four weeks ago at Philadelphia. The same injury, along with an undisclosed illness, sidelined him Thursday.

Samuel left the Arizona game with a shoulder injury and hasn’t practiced this week.

Atlanta (9-1) visits Tampa Bay (6-4) on Sunday.

49ERS: Quarterback Alex Smith has been fully cleared medically following concussion testing, but the team is proceeding with plans to start Colin Kaepernick on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, according to a team source.

Smith told on Wednesday night that coach Jim Harbaugh informed the two quarterbacks earlier in the day that Kaepernick would take all the first-team reps in practice this week leading into Sunday’s game.

Harbaugh also said Wednesday the QB for the NFC West-leading Niners (7-2-1) could change week to week, and even during the course of a game.

Smith missed Monday night’s 32-7 rout of the Bears while recovering from a concussion.

REDSKINS: Washington linebacker London Fletcher extended his consecutive games streak to 235.

The 15-year veteran who has never missed a game made his 190th consecutive start Thursday against Dallas.

Fletcher sprained his right ankle last weekend against Philadelphia and had five days to try to recover.

The 37-year-old started the day tied with Tampa Bay’s Ronde Barber for the longest current games played streak in the NFL.

The record for consecutive starts is 297 by quarterback Brett Favre. The record for a defensive player is 270 by Jim Marshall.
