From Omaha: Local swimmers at Olympic Trials

Peggy Jeschke, mother of 14-year-old Augusta swimmer Jackie Jeschke, is providing updates from the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Neb. Here is her report from Monday’s events:

Day 1 of the Olympic Trials is over and we enjoyed watching two of our Aiken-Augusta Swim League athletes compete.

Steven Kekacs swam a career best in the 400 free and showed how to handle the nerves which affected some of the country’s fastest swimmers. This allowed him to make a huge jump from 103rd to 48th in the country.

C.J. Hendry, while unable to best her seed time, got her first-swim jitters out of the way and is looking to rebound with her next event the 200 fly.

As for Jackie, it was the first time in her career that she smiled through an entire practice because she knew she was in the water with the best swimmers in the world as she did her workout in the Olympic Trial pool. On to tomorrow!
