CARDINALS: Transferred pitcher Chris Carpenter to the 60-day disabled list to clear a roster spot for rookie right-hander Joe Kelly’s major league debut against Cleveland on Sunday.

The Cardinals also sent backup catcher Steven Hill to Triple-A Memphis.

MARLINS: First baseman Gaby Sanchez was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans and is back in the lineup.

Sanchez was batting .197 with one home run in 36 games when he was demoted May 19. He went 1 for 4 with an RBI on Sunday.

• Right-hander Carlos Zambrano says his stiff lower back feels much better, less than 24 hours after he had to leave a game in the third inning.

PADRES: Optioned right-hander Andrew Cashner to Double-A San Antonio and called up right-hander Brad Boxberger from Triple-A Tucson.

RED SOX: Placed reliever Rich Hill on the 15-day disabled list with tightness in his left elbow.

Hill had Tommy John surgery on the elbow a year ago and will be examined today. Boston recalled Mark Melancon from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace Hill in the bullpen.

ANGELS: Catcher Chris Iannetta (broken right wrist) will begin a rehab assignment today with Class-A Inland Empire.
