Letien fires 69 to lead Pacers

In Simpsonville, Ky., USC Aiken is tied for 10th place after 18 holes of stroke play in the NCAA Division II national championship tournament at Cardinal Club Golf Course.

The top eight teams after 54 holes of stroke play advance to match play on Friday. There are 20 teams in the field.

USC Aiken shot 4-over 292, which put it one shot out of a tie for eighth place. Central Oklahoma is the team leader at 279.

Hayden Letien led the Pacers with 3-under-par 69, which is tied for third individually, four off the lead of Central Oklahoma’s Josh Creel.

The Pacers also counted 72 by Gaines Milliner, 74 by J.P. Solis and one of the 77s shot by Matt Atkins and Taylor Welborn.

• Six area pros, including Augusta’s Mitch Krywulycz, have made it through U.S. Open local qualifiers at various sites.

Krywulycz, the former Augusta State golfer, was the medalist with 64 at Marietta Country Club.

The other five players to move on were Augusta’s Brad Arrington, former USC Aiken golfer Ryan Dillon, Sandersville, Ga.’s David Robinson, Aiken’s Kevin Kisner and Evans’ Chip Deason.

Arrington shot 64 to tie for first place at Summer Grove Golf Club in Newnan, Ga.; Dillon was the medalist with 65 at Los Colinas Country Club in Irving, Texas; Robinson tied for second place with 70 at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla.; Kisner tied for fourth with 70 at DeBordien Club in Georgetown, S.C.; and Deason tied for fourth with 70 at Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala.

The six players advance to sectional qualifiers. The U.S. Open starts June 14 at Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif.

Mercer pitchers handle Jackets

In Macon, Ga., Mercer rallied with two runs in the eighth inning to stop Georgia Tech 4-3 on Tuesday.

Five Mercer pitchers kept the potent offense of Georgia Tech(33-22) in check.

• In Clemson, S.C., senior righthander David Haselden gave up two runs in 7⅔ innings as Clemson beat Furman 9-2.

The Tigers improved to 32-21.

• In Athens, Ga., catcher Brett DeLoach had three hits, including two doubles, as Georgia beat East Tennessee State 7-4 for the Bulldogs’ 30th win of the season against 22 losses.

• In Kennesaw, Ga., Eric Phillips homered and Georgia Southern beat Kennesaw State 7-3.

Soccer

South Aiken falls in the semifinals

In Aiken, Wando defeated South Aiken 4-0 in the Class AAAA semifinals.

Hamilton Carlin had two goals to lead Wando, faces J.L. Mann in Columbia for the state title on Saturday.

Softball

Lady Knights to take on top seed

In St. George, Utah, District J champion Aiken Tech opens play in the National Junior College Athletic Association championship on Thursday.

The Lady Knights, who are the 16th seed, will take on top seed Chattanooga State Community College.

Djokovic takes opener in Rome

In Rome, top-ranked Novak Djokovic made a solid return to red-clay courts, dominating Bernard Tomic 6-3, 6-3 to open his Italian Open title defense.
