Jackets win in shortened game

In Hagerstown, Md., Brett Krill went 2 for 4 with two RBI to lead the Augusta GreenJackets to an 8-1 win over the Hagerstown Suns in a rain-shortened contest on Tuesday.

The game, which started at 10:35 a.m., was called in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Jose Cuevas and Carlos Willoughby added two RBI apiece for the GreenJackets.

Tankersley earns Peach Belt honor

USC Aiken’s Will Tankersley was named Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year on Tuesday.

The former Thomson standout was also chosen as a second team outfielder.

Five other USC Aiken players were named all-conference.

Outfielder Nick Aranas and catcher Josh Miller were first team choices, while shortstop Stephen Carmon, second baseman Tyler Bourdo, a former Augusta Christian standout, and pitcher Ryan Milewski joined Tankersley on the second team.

Tankersley leads the Pacers and is tied for second in the conference with a .385 batting average. He is second in the league with a .645 slugging percentage and his nine home runs are tied for third in the league.

• In Clemson, S.C., Richie Shaffer had three hits, including a homer, to lead Clemson (29-20) to a 9-8 win over Tennessee Tech (19-28).

Golf

Pacers tied for third at regional

In Conover, N.C., USC Aiken is tied for third heading into the final round of the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional at the Jones Course at Rock Barn Golf and Spa.

The Pacers’ two-round total of 584 (294-290) ties them with UNC Pembroke (296-288) and Barry (295-289).

Georgia College leads the way at 580 (291-289) and Florida Tech is second at 581 (286-295).

The top five teams advance to the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship set for May 15-19 at the Cardinal Club Golf Course in Louis­ville, Ky.

USC Aiken’s Matt Atkins (70-70–140) is tied for second in the individual standings. He’s two shots behind Eckerd College’s Jeff Evanier (70-68–138).

Among other players who counted for the Pacers, Taylor Welborn (72-73–145) is tied for 17th, J.P. Solis (80-69–149) is tied for 40th, Gaines Milliner (72-81–153) is tied for 73rd and Hayden Letien (82-78–160) is tied for 101st.

• In Newnan, Ga., Augusta’s Brad Arrington shot 64 to earn low medalist honors in a U.S. Open local qualifier at SummerGrove Golf Club.

Serb advances, bashes blue clay

In Madrid, Novak Djokovic needed three sets to win his first match on the blue clay at the Madrid Open on Tuesday, and then stepped up his criticism of the new surface.

Djokovic labored to a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Daniel Gimeno-Traver in his debut on the unorthodox surface.

“To me that’s not tennis. Either I come out with football shoes or I invite Chuck Norris to advise me how to play on this court,” said Djokovic.

Zenyatta in foal for second time

Zenyatta is pregnant with her second foal at Lane End’s Farm in Versailles, Ky.

The superstar mare’s owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, announced Tuesday that an ultrasound showed Zenyatta in foal after being bred to Tapit.
