Dogs’ Thomas will transfer out

In Athens, Ga., Georgia tailback Carlton Thomas has decided to transfer.

Bulldogs coach Mark Richt announced Tuesday that Thomas has decided to switch schools for his senior season. Thomas said in a statement that his decision was based on the fact that it’s his last year to play and he wants to “make more of an impact on the field.”

He didn’t say in the statement where he’s headed.

Struggling Jags drop 8th in a row

Augusta State committed four errors, falling 5-2 to Newberry on Tuesday for the Jaguars’ eighth consecutive loss.

Kevin Rufus was 2 for 4 with an RBI to lead Newberry (10-18).

Curtis Parker had a two-run homer for the Jaguars (8-20).

• In Aiken, Will Tankersley drove in a pair of runs with a single in the bottom of the eighth inning, helping USC Aiken rally for an 8-7 win over Anderson.

Josh Miller had four hits and Ty Barkell homered for the Pacers (20-6).

• In Greenville, S.C., Joey Pankake was 5 for 6 with two RBI to lead South Carolina to an 8-5 win over Furman.

Evan Marzilli added four hits including a three-run homer for the Gamecocks (16-4).

• In Clemson, Steve Wilkerson was 4 for 4 with two RBI to lead Clemson to a 6-2 win over Elon.

Tyler Slaton had two hits and an RBI for the Tigers.

Pacers finish in 14th at Bobcat

In Eatonton, Ga., USC Aiken posted a final-round total of 31-over-par 299 to finish 14th at the 17-team Bobcat Intercollegiate.

The Pacers finished at 31-over 883 at the 54-hole event at Cuscowilla Golf Resort. They were 38 shots behind Barry, which posted 279.

USC Aiken was led by Matt Atkins (67-70-70–207), who tied for eighth in the individual standings.

Also counting for the Pacers, Hayden Letien (70-74-77–221) tied for 51st, Taylor Welborn (76-72-74–222) tied for 56th, J.P. Solis (75-71-79–225) tied for 67th and Andrew Ward (73-76-78–227) tied for 70th.

Playing as an individual, USC Aiken’s Gaines Milliner (73-73-73–219) tied for 44th.

Lynn’s Daniel Young (69-65-68–202) won the individual title by one shot.

• Southern Wesleyan easily won the Paine College Invitational at Jones Creek Golf Course.

The Warriors posted a final-round 301 to finished at 606 and win by 43 shots over Morehouse.

Paine finished fourth in the four-team, 36-hole event, finishing at 702.

Paine counted scores from Vitor Tapia (81-73–154), who finished fifth, Carlos Solis (78-72–160), who tied for seventh, Patrick Mobley (91-85–176), who tied for 18th and Pat Lillis (102-110–212), who finished 20th.

Williams added to U.S. roster

Philadelphia defender Sheanon Williams will replace Josh Gatt on the U.S. roster for men’s Olympic soccer qualifying, which starts this week.

Gatt was recalled by Molde after other players on the club got hurt.

Philadelphia midfielder Freddy Adu, the only holdover from the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, was picked as captain. D.C. United defender Perry Kitchen was selected vice captain.

The U.S. starts Olympic qualifying in the North and Central American and Caribbean region against Cuba on Thursday, then plays Canada (Saturday) and El Salvador (Monday.
