Evans 2, North Augusta 0

A night after facing Region 2-AAAA rival Greenbrier, the Evans Lady Knights soccer team proved it had more than enough left in the tank on Wednesday.

Shaking off the loss to the Lady Wolfpack, the Lady Knights came out in front of the home crowd and controlled the flow of the game from start to finish, beating North Augusta 2-0.

“It looked like we had some tired legs in the first half,” said Evans coach Kevin Musick. “We were more intense in the
second half.”

Caroline Edmunds and Brittany Huggins had a hand in both goals for the Lady Knights (4-1-1, 1-1).

“They work together well,” Musick said.

Edmunds sent a pass deep down the middle to Huggins, who beat two defenders, forcing Lady Jackets goalie Joy Price to make a diving save, tipping the ball out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick, the Lady Jackets (1-2-1) couldn’t clear the ball and Jessica Galvin was able to jam it home through traffic in front of the net at 19:59.

Helping offensively was Stephanie Mixon, who kept the pressure on North Augusta’s defense with her physical play along the right sideline.

Jennifer Deppen led the Lady Knights defense and took charge whenever a potential scoring threat arose.

“She is a key player for us,” Musick said. “She’s our leader and a captain and she sets the tone.”

Huggins, a senior, was also impressed by the play of the defense and Deppen.

“The defense was very solid and Jennifer Deppen is strong,” she said.

Evans’ corner kick paid dividends with just over 28 minutes left in the game. Edmunds kicked it from the left corner toward the back post where Huggins was waiting to head the ball past Price for the 2-0 advantage.

“I saw the ball coming and decided to head it,” Huggins said. “I usually score with my feet, but I had a feeling.”

The team’s scoring plays were a result of their attitude, according to Musick.

“We’re aggressive and we try to be aggressive in our corner kicks,” he said.

Evans goalie Ashley Fischer made seven saves.
