Ice Bears gain on RiverHawks

In Knoxville, Tenn., David Segal scored a power-play goal with 3:03 left to play, and the Knoxville Ice Bears made up ground on Augusta with a 1-0 victory over the RiverHawks on Saturday night.

The Ice Bears, who came in eight points behind the RiverHawks in the SPHL standings, closed to within six and jumped ahead of Columbus, which fell to the Mississippi Surge 2-0 on Saturday, for second place.

Kyle Rank made 31 saves in the shutout for Knoxville.

Peter Skoggard stopped 28 of 29 shots for Augusta.

Basketball

Tuskegee earns sweep of Paine

Tuskegee outscored Paine College by 15 points in the second half to break a tie and beat the Lions 69-54 Saturday at Richmond Academy.

Derrick White had 17 points and 16 rebounds to lead Tuskegee (13-8, 13-6 SIAC).

Allen Young led Paine (12-9, 11-8) with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Kenny Fluellen added 12 points.

In the women’s game, Tuskegee rallied in the second half to beat Paine 61-57.

The Lady Lions (3-18, 3-14) led 30-26 at the break but were outscored 35-27 in the second half.

Alondra Rivers led Tuskegee (16-6, 13-5) with 15 points.

Baiesha Johnson had 11 to lead Paine.

Former Lion lifts Pacers to victory

In Aiken, Tyler Bourdo singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday to give USC Aiken a 2-1 victory over Carson-Newman in the Carolina Outdoors Classic.

The former Augusta Christian standout finished 2 for 5. Stephen Carmon went 3 for 4 to lead the Pacers (5-0).

Ryan Milewski got the win, pitching 2⅔ innings of scoreless relief.

• In Carrollton, Ga., West Georgia opened its season with a 14-6 victory over Augusta State.

Kevin Dodson and Curtis Parker had two RBI apiece for the Jaguars (3-2).

Spurrier, Tanner get hefty raises

South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier and baseball coach Ray Tanner each received six-figure raises after leading their teams where they had never been before.

The university Board of Trustees voted to give Spurrier a $475,000 raise, boosting his salary to $3.3 million a year after the football team won 11 games last season for the first time in school history. Tanner, whose team won a second consecutive national championship, received a $140,000 raise and a one-year contract extension to 2016 for a deal that now pays him $650,000 a year.

Morgan’s goals propel the U.S.

In Frisco, Texas, Alex Morgan tied it in the 88th minute and added the winner just before the final whistle in stoppage time to give the U.S. women’s soccer team a 2-1 exhibition victory over New Zealand

Hymn Book wins Donn Handicap

In Hallandale Beach, Fla., Hymn Book won the $500,000 Grade 1 Donn Handicap, holding off a field that also included Preakness winner Shackleford and Belmont champion Rule On Ice.

Hymn Book ran 1⅛ miles in 1:49.16 and paid $1, $7.80, and $5.60. Mission Impazible was second.
