The cameras came out as the cheering rained down on a Super Bowl champion.
Augusta native Deon Grant returned home Friday night, arriving at Josey during the night’s basketball games against Laney.
“Everything I do, I do it with Augusta in my mind,” Grant said.
Upon announcement that Grant was at the gym, George Bailey, the athletic director for Richmond County schools, helped present Grant with a plaque and the Josey cheerleaders performed two separate cheers specialized for Grant.
Grant said he usually comes back for a Josey-Laney game, adding he wanted to “show the kids some love.”
Grant has been a champion at every level, winning a state title at Josey in 1995, a BCS national championship with Tennessee for the 1998 season and a Super Bowl crown with the New York Giants after the 21-17 win against the New England Patriots on Sunday.
Grant, surrounded by fans as he walked around, said he is motivated by bringing the city – especially the inner city – something to cheer about.
At halftime of the boys game, it was announced chips, candy and drinks were free courtesy of Grant.
“I represent Josey first, but I definitely represent Augusta, Carolina and all the surrounding areas,” Grant said. “Wherever I go, I’m taking the city with me.”
