Minor League Hockey

’Hawks return to ice with victory

In Columbus, Ga., the Augusta RiverHawks ended a seven-day break from action by beating the Columbus Cottonmouths 2-1 on Friday night.

Jim Gehring scored the game-winner at the 4:44 mark of the third period. Drew Baker and Jason Price had assists.

Justin MacDonald had the other Augusta goal, at the 17:14 mark of the second period that tied it at 1-1.

Jon Othuis had 19 saves for Augusta.

College Baseball

USC Aiken rolls in season opener

In Aiken, Stephen Carmon and Stephen Bellantoni powered USC Aiken to a 15-3 victory over Lincoln Memorial in the season-opener for both teams.

Carmon and Bellantoni were both 3 for 4 and stole two bases each. Carmon had three RBI and scored three runs. Bellantoni also scored three times.

Starter Derek Beasley, a former Harlem High pitcher, struck out eight batters in five innings of work for the win.

The teams will play single games today and Sunday in Aiken. Both will start at 1 p.m.

College Basketball

Clemson women win in overtime

In Blacksburg, Va., freshman Nikki Dixon scored 19 points to lead Clemson to a 55-51 overtime victory over Virginia Tech.

Senior Lindsey Mason pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds for the Tigers.

Clemson (6-14, 2-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) overcame a 15-point first-half deficit to force overtime.

• In Chapel Hill, N.C., Chay Shegog had 20 points and Candace Wood added 14 points, leading No. 23 North Carolina to a 64-56 win over Virginia.

Armstrong case dropped by Feds

The case against Lance Armstrong is closed. His legacy as a seven-time Tour de France champion endures.

Federal prosecutors dropped their investigation of Armstrong on Friday, ending a nearly two-year effort aimed at determining whether the world’s most famous cyclist and his teammates joined in a doping program during his greatest years.

Armstrong steadfastly has denied he doped during his unparalleled career.

Colleges

ACC announces revised schedule

The Atlantic Coast Conference will play a nine-game schedule in football and every team will compete in the ACC basketball tournaments once Syracuse and Pittsburgh join the league.

The league announced Friday how it will incorporate the schools once they leave the Big East Conference.

ACC commissioner John Swofford said Friday it’s still unclear when that will happen since Big East bylaws require a 27-month notice for a school to leave.

Baseball

Rangers star has alcohol relapse

Josh Hamilton, the Texas Rangers slugger and 2010 AL MVP, said Friday that he had a relapse that started with “three or four” drinks at a Dallas-area bar Monday. He says he had more drinks later that night.

The recovering drug addict apologized for what he called a “weak moment.”

• Right-hander Matt Garza has agreed to a $9.5 million, one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs, just before the scheduled start of a salary arbitration hearing.
