Effingham County sweeps Evans in basketball

On Senior Night in Evans, both the boys and girls basketball teams put up a good fight but fell short in the end.

The Evans boys faced a tall task going against an Ef­fing­ham County squad that beat the Knights by 43 points in the previous meeting.

The Knights (14-10, 6-3 in Region 2B-AAAA) missed some opportunities late and scored just five fourth-quarter points, losing 53-42.

“We had some turnovers at the wrong time and missed some layups that could have kept us in the game,” Knights coach Kevin Kenny said.

Damion Foreman led the Knights with a game-high 17 points while Tyler Moore chipped in 12.

The teams traded body shots throughout the contest. The Knights used a 15-2 run early to take a 19-9 lead, but the Rebels (21-1, 9-0) battled back to close within 24-23 at the half.

At the end of the third period, 6-foot-7 center Jakeenan Gant dunked twice to give the Rebels a 39-36 lead and they carried the momentum into the fourth.

The Knights would get no closer than 41-39.

The Evans girls held the lead until the end of the third quarter. when the Lady Rebels tied the score at 26.

The Lady Rebels scored the first four points of the fourth quarter and never looked back en route to a 36-32 victory.

The Lady Knights (12-12, 3-6) limited the Lady Rebels to just one shot on each possession in the early stages, but the Lady Rebels (12-9, 5-4) increased the pressure in the second half, with turnovers taking a toll on the Lady Knights.

Jakayvea Akins led the Lady Rebels, scoring all her 10 points in the second half.

Jasmine Stone paced the Lady Knights with a game-high 11 points.

“I’m proud of the kids and the their hard work,” said Lady Knights coach Ryan Morningstar. “It would have been nice to get a win on senior night.”
