Dogs out of Top 25; Gamecocks stay put

Georgia dropped out of The Associated Press Top 25, while South Carolina remained at
No. 12.

The Bulldogs were beaten soundly by Boise State, which moved up to No. 4, while the Game­cocks had early troubles before pulling away from East Carolina on Saturday.

Louisiana State moved up to No. 2 behind Oklahoma after its win over Oregon.

Oregon dropped nine spots to No. 13, and defending national champion Auburn fell out of the Top 25 after needing a late rally to beat Utah State at home. Notre Dame also dropped out.

Moving into the rankings were No. 20 Baylor, No. 22 South Florida, No. 23 Penn State and
No. 24 Texas.

• Ohio State tailback Jordan Hall, cornerbacks Travis Howard and Corey Brown and linebacker Jordan Whiting were reinstated for Saturday’s game against Toledo.

The four players had been suspended in December for last week’s opener for accepting cash and discounted tattoos from a local tattoo-parlor owner.

• Notre Dame coach Brian Kel­ly is switching to Tommy Rees at quarterback for Saturday’s game at Michigan.

• Southern California reinstated Marc Tyler after the suspended tailback missed one game and much of training camp for a series of disciplinary problems culminating in a rant on TMZ.

Pacers junior takes Kiawah Island title

On Kiawah Island, S.C., USC Aiken junior Taylor Welborn shot 1-under-par 71 to win the Kiawah Island Invitational by one shot.

Welborn finished with a 36-hole total of 15-under 139. JP Howell finished second for Georgia Southwestern, which won the team title. The Pacers were second overall.

Two other USC Aiken golfers had top-15 finishes. Matt Atkins tied for 12th at 148 and Mark Dickson tied for 14th at 149.

Garrard cut by Jags; McCown will start

The Jacksonville Jaguars released veteran quarterback David Garrard, a stunning move that will save the franchise $9 million this season.

Coach Jack Del Rio will turn the starting job over to Luke McCown, who outplayed Garrard and rookie Blaine Gabbert in the preseason.

• Contract talks between the Chicago Bears and running back Matt Forte are on hold.

Forte was looking for an extension as he headed into the fourth and final season on his rookie contract, but general manager Jerry Angelo says talks are off until after the season.

Chicago faces Atlanta in the season opener Sunday.

U.S. is still winless under Klinsmann

In Brussels, Belgium beat a youthful U.S. team 1-0 on Tuesday in new coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s first match on the road.

Nicolas Lombaerts’ half volley in the 55th minute gave Belgium the only goal of the game.

Klinsmann was looking for his first win in the international friendly, following a draw at home against Mexico and a loss to Costa Rica.
