Sailfish ruin Pacers soccer home opener

In Aiken, USC Aiken’s men’s soccer team had its home opener spoiled in a 4-0 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic.

Four different players scored for the Sailfish with Kenny Hogg and Kevin Ireland leading the way with each capturing a goal and an assist.

• In Kiawah Island, S.C., Taylor Welborn’s first round 68 helped the USC Aiken golf team move into second place at the Kiawah Island Invitational at Cougar Point Golf Course.

USC Aiken’s Hayden Letien, Mark Dickson and Matt Atkins all carded 75s in the first round.

Georgia will honor Payne, swimmers

Augusta National Golf Club chairman Billy Payne and Olympic swimmers Kristy Kowal and Courtney Shealy have been chosen for induction in the University of Georgia Circle of Honor.

Payne, Kowal and Shealy will be recognized at the Georgia-South Carolina football game on Saturday. They will be inducted into the Circle of Honor on Friday, April 13, 2012.

Payne, a former football standout with the Bulldogs, launched a successful bid to bring the 1996 Games to the state as CEO of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games.

Kowal was chosen as the NCAA Woman of the Year and received the Top VIII Award for her accomplishments in the pool.

Shealy was named the NCAA and the SEC Female Swimmer of the Year in 2000. She captured national titles in the 50 freestyle, the 100 freestyle and the 100 backstroke.


College Basketball

Guard Terrell leaves Deacs after arrest

Guard J.T. Terrell is withdrawing from Wake Forest and leaving the basketball team after he was charged with driving while impaired.

Terrell’s attorney, Mike Grace, said in a statement issued Monday through the school that Terrell was arrested by Winston-Salem Police at about 3 a.m. Saturday.

Grace says the circumstances of the arrest and other signs indicate that Terrell “suffers from a serious medical condition which requires immediate attention.”

In the statement, Terrell apologized and said he will spend the next few months rebuilding his life and hopes to play college basketball again. Coach Jeff Bzdelik says Terrell is “at an important crossroads” and wishes him well.

Terrell started 18 of 32 games as a freshman last season and averaged 11 points.


NBA

Bosh expects Heat to hold workouts

Chris Bosh expects the Miami Heat to get together to start preparing for a new season in the coming weeks, regardless of the NBA’s lockout status.

The newly married Heat forward says he’s been working out on occasion at the University of Miami. Players from many NBA clubs have been using the Hurricanes’ practice facility in recent weeks.

After that, Bosh says he’ll be back in Miami to “start getting ready.”


Horse Racing

Marquez Jr. suffers broken collar bone

Jockey Carlos H. Marquez Jr. has a broken left collar bone from a spill during the third race at Monmouth Park.

Marquez was taken to a hospital after his horse, Break the Glass, went down. Track medical director Angelo Chinnici confirmed the injury Monday.

The horse was euthanized.

Jockey Channing Hill also was unseated by his horse Liston but track officials said he was not seriously injured and would continue riding.

It is the second time the 43-year-old Marquez has been injured on the track during the meet. In May, he hurt his right leg in the starting gate before a race.

• In Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Currency Swap edged long-shot Trinniberg by three-quarters of a length Monday in the $250,000 Hopeful Stakes for 2-year-olds at Saratoga Race Course.
