Proveaux leads Southern Cross

AIKEN - Cody Proveaux birdied three of the final holes for an opening 67 in the first round of the Southern Cross Invitational at Palmetto Golf Club.

Proveaux, a 17-year-old junior from Pelion High School and the defending champion, holds a two-shot lead over Will Starke of Chapin. Carson Young, playing as an individual, shot 70. North Augusta's Matt NeSmith is tied with with Dorman's Blake Kennedy and Clover's Andrew Ward at 71.

"I like this place," Proveaux said. "It's a lot of fun. I can hit a little draw."

Chapin posted a 6-over-par 219 total to lead the team competition by two over Pelion. Dorman shot 224, while A.C. Flora and Blythewood are tied at 226. Aiken and North Augusta opened with 234, while South Aiken posted 238.

 The final round begins at 7:30 Saturday morning.
