GreenJackets fall to Crawdads in 11
In Hickory, N.C., the Crawdads scored twice in the bottom of the 11th inning to defeat the Augusta GreenJackets 3-2 on Wednesday night.
Ryan Scoma 's RBI single on a two-strike pitch with two outs in the top of inning had given Augusta a 2-1 lead before Hickory rallied.
In the bottom of the inning, Josh Richmond singled with the bases loaded to tie it at 2, and Christian Villanueva followed with a chopper over shortstop Ydwin Villega s' head to score the game-winner.
McMillan, Ellis top Paine winner's list
Fernisha McMillan and Casheba Ellis were double MVP winners at Paine College's awards banquet.
McMillan was co-MVP with Victoria Claytor in volleyball and with Erin Simone Kennedy in softball.
Ellis was the MVP in women's cross country and shared MVP honors with Baiesha Johnson in women's track and field.
The other MVP winners were Thomas Broughton in men's basketball and Mason Rhodes and DeAndre Pettigrew in men's track and field.
MVP's were not named for some of the sports.
- Byron Faison and Triahna Harris were the MVPs for the USC Aiken basketball teams this year, it was announced at the school's athletic banquet.
The other MVPs were Shannon Byers in volleyball; Kelly Gillespie in cross country; Nicole Westphal in women's soccer; Brett Van Pelt in men's soccer; Stephanie Humphrey and Margot Simon in women's tennis; Gregory Andrade in men's tennis; Stephen Carmon in baseball; Lauren Locklear in softball and Hayden Letien in golf.
Both Augusta State teams in regionals
The Augusta State women's and men's teams were selected to compete in NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.
The seventh-seeded and 35th-ranked Lady Jaguars (13-11) will face second-seeded Columbus State (16-5) on Monday at 9 a.m., in Columbus, Ga.
The fifth-seeded and 20th-ranked Jaguars (16-8) will play fourth-seeded Flagler (11-7) at 10 a.m., in Savannah, Ga.
Lady Jaguars fifth; Lady Pacers seventh
Augusta State is ranked fifth and USC Aiken is ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings.
The top eight teams in the region will earn berths in the Division II Softball Championship. The field will be announced on May 9.
Hall of Fame event on tap for weekend
The Disc Golf Hall of Fame Classic will be held Saturday and Sunday at the International Disc Golf Center at Wildwood Park in Columbia County.
Some 130 professional and amateur disc golfers from 15 or more states, including seven former and current world champions, will compete in the tournament.
Admission is free.
Signups under way for Top 60 Women's
Entries are now being accepted for the 30th annual Georgia Top 60 Women's Classic, scheduled for June 28-29 at The Brickyard at Riverside in Macon.
The event is open to female amateurs who are Georgia State Golf Association members and have a USGA handicap index of 15.0 or less. Deadline for entering is June 8.
Entries are also open for the Georgia Amateur Championship (through May 11), Georgia Women's Match Play (through 25), and Georgia Girls' and Junior Championships (through June 1).
